Just found this thread because today I pulled my three reports from annual credit and I see I have close to 100 soft inquires on each file. This now has me concerned about a split file I've seen mentioned here a few times.

How can I lessen the ones caused by me.

If I only check say like Credit Karma one time a month instead of twice a week would this lesson some I get? Or do the soft pull you regardless of whether you check or not. I get email updates from them so thinking they check even when I don't sign in?

i also use credit sesame and credit.com. Same question for them.

Most are from 2016 2017 so it will be a while before they drop off.

I also worry about a split file with TU since it actually happened to me a few years ago. I’m bad about using CK, Wallethub, etc. This post reminded me I need to lay off daily pulls with TU. With EX I don’t think it happens. EQ can but not as bad TU I believe. Everyone seems to be obsessed with providing TU FAKOs.

Samster do you know if credit karma checks even when we don't sign in? I get emails from them when things change so this makes me think they do. If not I'm going to try and not open the monitoring sites constantly. But I worry they are soft pulling even when I don't log in. As a matter of fact the other day I logged in and it said on credit karma last update 9 hours ago. So I think it was pulled 9 hours prior to me checking it.

I’d actually like to know too! I don’t think so because it updates your scores when you login and it happily spins while you wait. I would think not logging in would keep the SPs at bay, but I could be totally wrong.

All of the bureaus made changes to their infrastructures (well EX may not have as they didn't have this issue in the first place) as a result of the soft pulls from monitoring software overloading their inquiry data. Actually prior to the changes a boatload of soft inquiries could push hard ones off the table.

No need to worry about that anymore to my knowlege at least, though you needed a a few daily pullers to overload it back in the day, CK at a weekly pull was a non-event for me... you basically had to go out of your way to create the issue.

This problem happened to me and it's very frustrating. As far as I can tell it only happens with Equifax because for some reason their credit files can only hold a certain limited amount of data. Each time there is a soft inquiry made it uses up space until you run out of space in your file and it won't allow a SP. When this happened to me it took me a few weeks to figure out what the problem was. Equifax didn't know what was wrong I had to figure it out myself online. When this happens the soft pulls have to be manually removed. They call this account maintenance and if you are lucky it takes 10 business days. After about 2 weeks I filed a complaint with the CFPB and it was finally fixed (I hope- I hear it can reoccur). When it happens no data can be added to your report. When it was finally fixed an new account that had reported to TU and EX was missing from my report and I had to wait 3 weeks until my bank made its monthly report update for it to show on EQ. That was the only account I had reporting a balance that month so I was stuck with all accounts reporting zero for three weeks. I have USAA credit monitoring, Credit Karma etc. I was soft pulling EQ every day on one of the services and the other services pulled it another 2 to 3 times a week. It is a lot of SP's but I didn't know it could be a problem. I'm pretty sure by stopping the daily SP I can't avoid this in the future. I'm hoping this post can help people to avoid this problem.

I also want to mention that the reason I was checking my report daily was to see when my revolving accounts reported so I could PIF/make a new charge to keep my accounts active, interest free and have all accounts reporting zero except one.
