Was a payment plan set up to make the smaller payments? If not that's probably why it was sent to collections. I would give them a call to see if anything can be done.

I recently canceled my Comcast service at the end of February. Mid March I started making payments to Comcast to pay down my balance. Last week I got a letter in the mail stating it's been sent to collections. Can they send it to collections and I've been making payments? I mean it's only been about a month since I've canceled and Comcast continues to accept my payments so i'm not sure why they would send it to collections.

Unless you made a payment arrangement with them where they agreed to accept smaller amounts over time, then yes they can. Also, if you miss a payment, or are late pass the due date they can. I think they can report you even if you make an agreement unless it's specified that they will not as long as you pay on time.
