Bureau profile update from phone call, how long?

This question could pertain to any bureau really, but specifically I called Equifax today to have them remove an improperly represented version of my name. It was in fact the main name on my report, where my "also know as" name was really the correct representation. I asked the rep to remove the main name completely, then move my "also known as name" to the main name, so that it's the only one on my credit report. It took him probably 5 minutes to understand what I was getting at exactly, but in the end I am confident that he was able to do what I requested. At the end he said it could "take up to 30 days to change" which I thought was odd. Wouldn't such a change be instant? I mean, if he just made the change in system, I would think if anyone were to access my credit report even right away (or tomorrow, for example) that the report would have my correct name on it. Is my thought process wrong here? After he made the change, I asked if he could send me a copy of my updated credit report so that I could verify the change was made correctly and he said, "If it sent it to you now, it would still appear wrong since it could take up to 30 days..."

Thoughts or opinions on this?

Well it is EQ, so you probably have to hack them to get the proper info. I keed I keed.

Most updates do take a 30 day cycle to report properly, so he wasn't way off base. but I agree with you it should be overnight honestly.

Why would it take a cycle though? I get it if you're talking an update made with a creditor, like if I changed my name with a creditor no doubt it would take at least a cycle (reporting) to see that update reflected on my credit report.

If the change is made directly with a bureau, though, what "cycle" would it need to go through, as it's simply the data on the account?

The same way if I made a change to my profile with one of my creditors today, if I called back tomorrow and inquired they would see the updated profile data, as the change was made in real time immediately. Of course this change wouldn't be seen on a credit report until it was reported by the creditor, which could take up to 30 days of course depending on where in the reporting cycle you made the change.
