Rec'd NetSpend envelope in mail - not my name

Inquirying about an envelope I received in the mail today.

Addressed to a name that I never heard of before, and after searching fb, whitepages, google etc,

cant seem to find that it is even a real name or not a common name at least.

we live on West, and there is no natching number on East of the same road/street

Address is my address. No one by that name lived here before.

We have been here 6 1/2 years and are only the 3rd family to live here since 1830s

It is a netspend envelope and has a card of some sort, just like a new card.

I have never had a netspend acct or card, so I cannot say if it is real or just a preapproval letter.

What should I do?

I guess I can either open it or give back to post office as return to sender.

I just am not sure how someone could make an address error like that,

and i wonder how someone coud open a fake account with my address

SOmething doesnt make sense.

Thoughts?

I would "return to sender."

They will get it figured out. It is debit not credit so I don't think you have a concern in that regards.

This exact thing happened to our address about a month ago. I was worried about either some sort of fraud (we are the only ones who have lived at this address EVER), or that whatever card was in the envelope was needed by the addressee and ended up here by mistake.

So I looked up netspend and called them. Well they honestly had no information (or wouldn't share it with me anyway). The agent was not very helpful at all, and not worried about it in the least. Said it was probably a postal service error. I doubt that's the case, it wasn't a postal service generated address, it was addressed by the company from what I could tell. The agent acted like I was a nut for calling him, like why would I care if it's not mine? He told me to destroy it, which I did.

That was it. I thought it was just a total fluke, but now seeing this happened to you from the same company makes me even more confused. Is there some new scam I haven't heard about yet? And if so how does this help them?

Totally forgot about the debit acct thing and 5% or whatever savings i think.

Yeah I google searched after getting it and read about someone receiving it in their actual

name, and it was some sort of phishing scam, but the post or blog was years ago.

They called and cancelled it.

If you reasonably believe that mail is not yours, then you have an obligation to return uopened to the U.S. Postal Service.

It is then up to the sendor to resolve the matter.
