Surprise Removal UPDATED

Around the second week of April, I submitted an online dispute- individually with all three bureaus. This was for a 4 year old collection that has been weighing my scores down. I had never disputed a collection before, so when I finally got results from Experian last night, I just assumed it was going to remain on my report.

Instead, to my jumping for joy explosion, they said it was now deleted and removed from my report. FANTASTIC. It wasn't until I followed up this morning, to find out just how heavy it was- My Experian FICO8 jumped 50 points right up to the 700 mark.

Yep, I'm partially now peaking into the 700club door. Which leads to my question for you guys....

What can I and should I expect here? Will I be needing to wait it out for results with the other bureaus? And what's the likelihood they come back with the same results? Am I misinformed that once a collection is removed from one bureau, the other two must comply and do the same with that account? I'm in new territory, educate me please!

That's awesome, congrats!!! Unfortunately, you may have varying experiences with the other two CBs. From what I've read around here, Experian is usually the quickest to update, and Equifax is the worst. Good luck!

The key to answering your question is WHY the collection was removed.

A collection can be removed after filing a dispute in one of two ways.

A dispute filed with a CRA must be referred to the party who reported the information to the CRA for their investigation and reply.

The furnisher could choose to either investigate and respond, or they could simply delete the reported collection, which obviates the dispute, and the disputed information is no longer of record.

If the debt collector decided, upon receipt of the dispute, to simply delete, then the dispute becomes moot.

The debt collector can choose to delete reporting made with only one CRA without raising any requirement to delete with other CRAs.

They can choose to delete with only one in order to simplify their reporting. It is not per se an admission that the reporting is inaccurate.

However, if the debt collector investigates and finds that the collection is improper and requires deletion, that is a positive determination on thier part that deletion is required.

In that event, it is not sufficient for them to delete their reporting only with the CRA that is handling the dispute.

FCRA 623(B)(1)(d) requires that

"if the investigation finds that the information is incomplete or inaccurate, report those results to all other consumer reporting agencies to which the person furnished the information and that compile and maintain files on consumers on a nationwide basis"

Did the CRA simply notify you that the collection was deleted, or did they send you a formal Notice of Results of Reinvestigation that stated that the CRA did the deletion based on a finding that the accuracy could not be verified?

@RobertEG
Excellent insight and questions. I've been trying to get to the bottom of it today. Here's a little history on the collection. I was moving from an apartment company at the time. I followed through with all vacating procedures and in fact, have it reported "Current/PIF" on their behalf.

However, with no formal notification, I discovered this collection on my CR for monies owed- plus interest. I've been in no position to investigate or fight it over the past 4 years, until now.

Looking back through my Experian account, of the several result statements, it reads "Deleted & Removed". The dispute was launched 4/16 and completed 5/8, well below the 30 day requirement.

While typing this, I found out I am receiving a letter from EX today, so hopefully I can update with more specifics.

Update: I'm flying on cloud 9 guys! Experian officially stated reasoning yesterday, that the collection was found to be obtained improperly. And early this morning I received updates from both the TU and EQ disputes that they concluded the same and the collection has been formally removed from all reports (being jointly responsible- including my wife's!!)
All 6 reports.

I can't wait to get all of the updated reports and scores. Finally a success story for me that I hope will encourage others 👍🏽
