I had a Cox collection put on my report in summer 2018. This happened during a move, they charged me for 2 additional months even though we moved out and requested to disconnect the service. We had to move twice in two months, so I did not realzie what happened until it was too late. When I called Cox they admitted charges were iffy, but I was too late to contest. So it went to collection, I disputed the account with credit bureaus and got it removed. Fast forward to this week, got a brand new collection letter from another collection agency and totally freaking out about it hitting my credit reports again. What would you recommend doing?

So is Cox saying you owe them, or not? "Iffy" makes me assume they aren't willing to admit it was an error.

They don't really admit it. They said they probably would have removed charges if I contacted them earlier since the charges post date my move but once the account is in collection they won't touch it

Was there any equipment involved? I used to work for Comcast and by law, your service has to stop being billed either the day you return equipment, the day your transfer is scheduled for install if you are transferring to a new address, or the day you call and schedule a disconnect if there is no equipment. The only time that you can continue to be billed beyond that is if you didn’t specifically request to be disconnected or if you had leased equipment in which case billing continues until the date of return. Cox can’t sit there and tell you that you’re beyond some imaginary point where they can’t do anything if this was legitimately their fault. Ask for a supervisor and escalate it.

I did receive a Notice of Results of Reinvestigation from the CRA stating that they deleted, so based on this I assume another collection agency can't randomly report this for the same debt? I do not know what documentation they have, I am contemplating contacting COx again, asking for a supervisor again, and hope to find someone more reasonable maybe?

There was no equipment involved, at least I returned it all and have a bill that shows it was returned. They apparently did not disconnect services on the day I requested, then soft disconnected the service on the house I moved from, then sent someone to physically disconnect as I requested, and charged me through all of this and more. I have all the paperwork still but need to find someone who'd listen and do something about it, which is hard once the account is in collections. Everytime I call they tell me to call the collection agency

Once a company charges off an unpaid debt and sells it to a collection agency, they have nothing to do with it any longer. The collection agency is in control of collecting what they can They want their money back after purchasing your debt. If you pay it now, you'll revive the collection and it'll be updated on your report. Do -nothing-. They will hound you for a few years but, if you remain silent, your credit report won't be touched.

Say nothing. Do nothing.

Say nothing and do nothing is an ostrich plan that will not prevent the debt collector from continuing to update their collection to show that it remains unpaid. Simply letting the period of delinquency continue to increase does not improve scoring, and if still within SOL, could lead to civil action.

Each time they update, which can be monthly, that affects scoring by increasing the time since initial delinquency.

Paying will terminate, as of date paid, the total period of delinquency and thereafter permit the collection to begin to age in scoring impact rather than to continue to increase in negative impact.
