Unexpected hard inquiry??

Hello knowledgeable people!
So I recently applied for (and approved, yay!) Paypal credit (the online only one) on 10/24 and a Wells Fargo Propel card (Uber Visa replacement) on 10/28. I received the normal hard inquiries, and everything was fine. Then, today, I received a notification from Credit Karma that I have a new hard inquiry. I thought it was one of the forementioned card applications, but it was a hard inquiry on my Transunion from UMB! I applied for (and approved, yay!) a UMB simply rewards on 08/07. I noticed that my original UMB hard inquiry from 08/07 is titled (on CK) "Umb Card Svc" and the one from today is titled "Umb Cred Svc". I'm not sure what the difference is.

Anyway, my question is:
In this scenario, is an unexpected hard inquiry from UMB likely? Or shouldn't happen? Do you think my recent hard inquiries spooked them, and they did a hard inquiry to thoroughly check that I'm not doing something careless?
Thank you all!!!

Often times notifications from CMS can be skewed whenever a creditor's name gets updated. Nonetheless, I would check your actual TU credit report (not from CMS) to see whether that 2nd inquiry from UMB displays.

Update! According to my Transunion report from AnnualCreditReport.com, Credit Karma is 100% correct concerning my initial UMB hard inquiry and the unexpected hard inquiry today.
What's the best course of action? Call UMB to see if I can find out more info? Will they know that sort of info? Dispute? I've read disputing is a pain, and it's easier to just deal with it. I'm open to suggestions!

It's not worth disputing with UMB or the credit bureau. It will have minimal impact on anything and it will be gone in two years with no scoring impact after a year.

You got a card that's exceptionally hard to get, I wouldn't poke UMB and risk losing that card.

Call UMB asap. You are assuming this is a hard inquiry for the card you have. Any time a hard inquiry is performed that you have no knowledge of your first instincts should be fraud. It is possible they accidentally hp with they meant to sp but that seems unlikely. (and you are sure you did not ask for a CLI. Because that can be a hp too.)

Call UMB and tell them you have a hard inquiry for X date and you did not apply for any new credit products.

To answer your question about whether the pull was because they were spooked. They would not do a hard inquiry in that case. The information a lender gets from a soft inquiry is exactly the same as they get from a hard inquiry. That is one of the reasons soft inquiries exist. So your existing lenders can pull you as often as they like to review you account without adverse affects to you. The hard inquires exist because lenders agree that when someone is seeking credit they want other possible lenders to know about it. Its risk management.

So, you all think the unexpected hard inquiry was a mistake on UMB's part, but I probably shouldn't inquire with them about it due to the possibility of them investigating and reducing my limit or closing my card because of my recent other hard inquiries?

You need to find out whether is was a mistake or fraud, so contacting them to make sure is not the latter is suggested. If it was a second pull for teh fist app, just let it go. If somone else apped a second card, that is what needsb to e resolved.

I just wanted to give all of you a final update. I called UMB and was told by a specialized department dealing with this topic that when I applied for my PayPal and Wells Fargo, they received info of my social being used for those applications (because it was me applying with my own social, but anyway) from "a third party", so they pulled another hard inquiry to make sure everything is okay.

So yeah, UMB is always watching.
Thanks all!!!

I looked it up and it's only 1.25% cash back on the first $5,000 and then 1.5% after... Surely there are other (easier) cards to get that are 2%, like PayPal MC. Heck, even Capital One's Quicksilver is better than that one.

You're not looking at the right card.

https://dcpowervisa.dccomics.com

The reason many of us want it though is because its a DC credit card... I certainly wanted a Wonder Woman credit card in my wallet, regardless of the superiority of the Marvel MC.
