I have really seen working hard to manage my credit and was making great progress with punching through 700 within the next 6 months. Then yesterday a collections hit experian and it took a 30 point dive. I do not recall anything being in collections, or owing anyone other than my known accounts which are all in good standing. I have received telephone calls, but I do not answer any unknown numbers because I receive at least 6 spam calls per day. I have not received any mail claiming I owe anyone or I have collection activity. I am really at a loss at how to proceed, and would love some constructive advice, all help much appreciated. The 1st step is to see WHO is saying you are in default. You can order your free annual credit reports here. You noticed a score drop on Experian so it makes sense to get that one first. I would check the other two as well.

Any next steps are contingent on what is on your credit report.

Definitely a bummer when something comes out of nowhere to negatively affect your scores when you are trying to improve them.

With that said Experian is the one that has the information on who just reported the collection so it will not be a mystery finding this out.

Once you find out the specifics then the forum can advise you on the next steps to take (there could be several).

Make sure to update this post then we will know how to advise you on how you should proceed.

I found the reporting collection agency it is Progressive Mgmnt Systems for $379. and I googled their #.should I call them?

Is it definitely your debt?

If so, I would seek to bargain for "pay for delete." Have Progressive delete the collection account from all three bureaus in exchange for your payment. And have them email you the settlement in case they "forget."

I do not recognize that debt. Possibly a medical bill that got missed from 5 or 6 years ago. If the debt is legitimately mine I want to make good on it. The bargain for delete sounds like a great option! Thanks

Ok good you found out who the collection agency is but they bought the debt from someone. You need to find out the ORIGINAL CREDITOR for the debt. It should be listed on the Credit report.

Once you find out the OC then you will know if the debt is truly yours. You can contact the agency later (do not admit the debt is yours) and ask for verification of the debt. If in fact the debt is yours then you can make a deal with the CA on a acceptable amount to pay for delete.

You must get this in writing first before you pay (some agencies don't live up to their side once they get the money). This will be your proof to have it deleted.

Yep. Get it in writing. Paper trail.

They might forget. They might forget to delete because they're swamped----not because they don't want to delete.

YEAH GUYS!!!

You guys pulled my butt out of the fire! I talked to Progressive Management Sstems (the collection agency) and found the bill was mine from June 2017 that I thought my health insurance had paid. Anyway I told them I was prepared to pay the bill right now in exchange for a notification to the credit bureaus that the collection has been deleted. She is sending me a letter in the mail tomorrow stating that, and this Friday it will be electronically sent to the credit bureaus. Now I hope my score will rebound! Thank you guys so much!

Make sure they are deleted---FROM the credit bureaus reports. All three bureaus.

Just my opinion. Take a heavy look at your finances over the last year. The name Progressive puts a bug in my ear for car insurance. I had the same issue a few years/cars ago. I switched insurance companys and at the same time moved from NY to Fl and got dinged becused I didnt pay the last payment on the old policy. Due to the move, I never recieved any notices from the old insurance company. Best thing you can do is have a look at your credit report, contact the reporting agency, ask about the original creditor and work with them(the original creditor)if they will. If not, file a dispute with the credit bureau and take it from there.

Edit: OK so now I see the issue has been solved. I gotta get out more often...........

Congrats! Just stay on top of it and make sure they actually delete!
