Discover closed my account !! Need advice on next move

Discover sent me an email requesting my 4506-T. I provided it as I had filed taxes for 2019 and that was what they needed to verify the account. A couple of weeks later they said that they could not verify my information and closed my account (see letter below)

Although the tracking doc from the USPS indicated that the IRS receievd my tax returns, I have not been able to verify that they actually did, either online or by phone (can't get discover-letter.PNGthrough to anyone)

Question: What is my best move at this point ? The manager of the "verifications" department said there is nothing she can do-it's been closed already--and will be reported as 'Closed by Grantor"--how bad of a hit is that ? Can I dispute/reverse this ?

Unless your utilization is affected by the reduction in available credit or other minor metrics like % of revolving accounts reporting a balance are affected, there should be no harm in the account being closed.

Any attempt to dispute the account will only result in it being affirmed by Discover. As a reminder, discussion of disputing valid credit reporting data is not allowed here.

I didn't mean dispute the card, I menat dispute/reverse the decision to close the account

Definitely don't dispute. It's accurate reporting. When validated, scores will suffer.

Discover has reopened closed cards. It's a rare occurrence, but has happened. I'd try to contact the Executive Office for assistance. No guarantees they can reverse, but nothing to lose by trying.

Unfortunately, you can't dispute or challenge their decision. Their systems are pretty automated and once something is submitted, there's almost no chance of reversal. They're going to simply tell you to reapply.

Good thing I kept at it and kept asking to get to another level of supervisor--persistence proved key and they "re-opened" the account !

Btw, this is after several CSR+managers said exactly what was said on this thread, that "it's a system thing, can't be changed".

Lesson here is, when you are in the right as a customer, keep fighting--I actually DID submit my 4506-T, and I actually HAD sent in my taxes--but the IRS seems to be deluged now and somehow lost track of my returns. I persisted in seeing if there was other documentation I could provide, and found a supervisor to accept 3 mo. bank statements as verification.

If anyone finds themselves in the same boat re: account verification with Discover, DM me and I'll shoot over the name, number and email of the supervisor who finally helped me.

Good job applying pressure and getting the decision reversed. I think too often people give up without trying hard enough or listen to members of this forum that may not have not had success in the past and think certain things aren't possible.

So glad you were able to get your account reinstated!! You did what you were supposed to - no reason to get punished for the IRS's incompetence. Good to know persistence pays off.

I was offered to send in 3 months statements when I first applied a couple months ago. The rep told me since the IRS is so backed up, the bank statements were an option also. I sent them in within 2 hours. I received the email 2 days layers saying financial review was complete and I can use my card.

Discover is doing this a lot lately. Some ppl have had bad luck, like my fiancée. Secured card approved, opened, and closed a week later bc they didn't like her 4506 docs. Then they took their sweet ass time sending her deposit back, almost 2 months. Discover has been funny lately.

Glad to hear you had success, going up against the system can be frustrating, so I know how wonderful it can feel when things work out in the end! Very glad to hear it and indeed a great lesson to others to be persistent but patient.

Love it when I hear how something worked out positive when most would agree it will not.

Persistence is the KEY to success sometimes.

A few years back I got into a bad situation with my bank and they closed my account. I talked to several bank people and finally got one to agree with re-opening my account. The thing is they insisted since the account was closed it HAD to be re-opened with a new account number.

That was going to be a problem because my direct deposit to them would bounce and be in limbo (and seeing how I owed them a good amount of fees they would have to wait on things being corrected before they would get them).

They kept insisting all accounts re-instated had to be given NEW account numbers and that is the only way it's done. I persisted and got transferred to a regional office and explained the situation. That person agreed to my request and re-instated my original account number.

Took a few days for everything to get back to normal as they had kicked me completely out the system.

They gave me a warning that they would be closely monitoring my account for any future problems and if anything occured they would immediately kick me back out forever.

A lesson I needed to learn in order to do right from then on. It's been 7 years since with me being a A+ customer.

(Also I opened up 2 other bank accounts at different banks as safety nets because......you just never know what the future may put you through beyond your control). cough...cough...Pandemics and such.

This is great news! I'm so happy for you. That must have been frustrating, especially since the reps told you that they couldn't override their own automated process. It's a good thing that you paid a little extra for tracking and didn't back down.
