I have a number of fraudulent inquiries on my TU report. I sent a police report and FTC report along with the letter. TU confirmed receipt and basically told me to get ****ed, and that they're denying it under 605B(c). They said they'll only send a letter out to the lender to validate if they're willing to remove, which is complete nonsense and against 605B rules.

I'll get the CFPB and a lawyer on them if I have to.

Find out what they are and why they are there before you try to dispute them with Transunion. You may need to directly contact whomever it was that pulled your report to learn exactly why they did so.

Once you find out that information we can help you with specifics regarding best next steps. The path you would take is different if there was fraud vs. a legitimate error. TL;DR if there was fraud you'll be next filing police reports then disputing inquiries but if done in error you'll be first asking for the inquiries to be withdrawn and if they don't do so within a reasonable time frame you'll be filing a complaint with the appropriate government agency.

While you're at it get a (free) copy of your Lexis Nexis Consumer Report online and check it for errors.

It can take a couple of months to get this all straightened out.

I apologize if it seems like you would need to explain it to a 5 year old but whenever I Google it I only get an explanation on how to do it and not the real difference between the two.

The most important difference is that a lock is in essense a private agreement between you and the CRA whereas a freeze is a regulatory construct imposed and enforced by laws so if a CRA screws up and inappropriately releases a frozen credit report they're more directly accountable to the government for it and you have more legal protections than with a locked file. Insofar as usage it's easier and generally faster to unlock and relock a credit file than it is to thaw and then refreeze a credit file.

A side effect of the greater effort and time needed to freeze/thaw/freeze a file vs lock/unlock/relock is that freezing does tend to help curtail impulsive applications since you can expect to have to wait a bit for thaw requests to be executed.

There are a few other differences but those are 2 of the most important onces.

Google has me some sorts of confused and so I couldn't decide which to do. Now however I will freeze mine. The freeze sounds to add an extra discipline that helps ward off spontaneous apping. Great help here thanks so much.

No, you typically cannot, unless you have a pre-existing relationship with them. This is why FRs on a CC, or auto-CLIs can take place even while your CRs are frozen.

@PayAndProsper Ah. Ok, thank you it makes sense now. So NFCU, for example, can still take a peek on a soft pull to review my reports because I have a secured CC with them. Got it.

That's correct. I do soft pulls for increases all the time (well, not all the time) with my reports frozen. Never an issue. Actually, I've had soft-pulls for pre-qual's for new credit cards twice with issuers I had no account with. I keep my reports frozen ALL the time!!

I do still want to be able to prequalify for a credit card so that's good to know because I froze mine a few days ago for the 1st time ever. Do you freeze just the 3 credit reports or the Sagestream/Lexis Nexis reports too? I read posts on here from 5 years ago but nothing solid from right now as to whether to freeze them or not. I don't have a clear understanding of why they are frozen I better understand what's on them is all.

Personally I've frozen all of them. The big 3, Sagestream, Innovis, and Lexis. Two of them merged iirc. In my case the SS, Inno, and L/N were VERY accurate. No red flags at all. They are a little more difficult to freeze as you've got to do it via snail-mail, so much more time is involved. With EQ, EX, and TU, the process takes just a few minutes online... very easy. It seems like the SS, Inno, and L/N are used mostly for identity verification. I've had those frozen for 3 years. I've had about 8 new accounts in that time and only once had an issue. On the Truist soft-pull pre-qual site they told me they were unable to verify my identity, so I just didn't bother moving forward with the app. Other than that, no issues. I'm sure that when I app for my next mortgage, I'll have to open all 6 up, but we'll see. Very happy with keeping everything frozen.

I want to freeze it all too no doubt. Thank you for explaining how you had to do the Sagestream etc. I saw that on Google when I sesrched but I prefer to also get real time up to date info here. I am thankful for the information and data you've shared this helps us beginning the journey. If I had known even half of the things I've learned here in just 2 short months all along I'd be in a better place. Since joining in April while following along with advice and researching etc. my EQ FICO score has went from a 522 to a 600. I promise you I'll still be asking g you questions though.

There are people here that are a treasure-trove of knowledge and I still seek them out. 🙂
