There are others who are more informed on this particular aspect of credit than I am, but my understanding is that while a credit account is in "dispute" status (for any reason) it's not figured into scores, etc. This would be consistent with the amount of available credit disappearing from your overall total for FICO purposes.

I suspect you'll see FICO acknowledge the $12k credit line once again when the dispute is resolved.

I took a vacation a couple weeks ago. I accidentally double booked a rental car. I started with booking through Delta and for whatever reason didn't think it went through and the booking was made. I didn't see an email. I then went through Chase's trial report and booked a rental. When I landed at my destination, I realized a mistake and tried to cancel the Chase booking. I disputed the charge, but it posted to my account and was told by the rental agency that I would not be charged for the rental, but it posted.
(i'm curious how this is going to play out, hopefully it's favorable)

now for some reason my credit report lost $12,000 in available credit, which is the limit on my sapphire preferred, is this correlated somehow?

Id log in to my Chase account right away. Maybe they canceled the charge and the account. B@$tards!

No no somehow you read something I didn't say, which is why I'm confused.

I disputed the rental car charge as it posted to my account and the front desk lady said I wouldn't be charged after 24 hours and it wasn't picked up. charge posted and I eventually reported it explaining the situation. The card is still open and I have a balance on it, with the usual don't have to pay the disputed charge amount etc. I have been using it since.working just fine.

so why would I Loose the exact amount of my CL on my reported credit report.

This should be easy since you didn't take possession of the rental car. Unless there is a charge for cancelling too close to the reservation date?

But, honestly, before jumping to a dispute, you should have first tried working with the car rental agency to have them simply refund your money. Even with a dispute, Chase is going to want to know you first tried working it out with the seller. You may be asked for proof(s). Proof that you tried working it out with the seller (save every single correspondence and keep a log of all your attempts to work directly with the seller), and proof that you did not receive the service or product you paid for. Gather the evidence you have showing that you cancelled and never took possession of the rental car.

Good luck.

Some of the smaller agencies might have fees for this, but the majors don't seem to. On the other hand, if this was a pre-paid rental, I would definately expect cancellation restrictions.
