Best CU for mortgage?

I'm looking to get a mortgage in the next couple weeks, and looking to get the best prices and rates.

I bank with NFCU, should I go through them or is there another option that would be better?

Which state are you in? I bank with NFCU and TDECU. Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) is a credit union based in Lake Jackson, Texas and is fantastic . . . the Mortgage Lending team is super and Customer Service is awesome!!!

I’m in Texas also, I forget about TDECU. I’ll check into them. I was also looking at First Community CU.

We used NFCU for our vacation home. We started the process late in September of 2021, and barely made it to our closing 11/19/2021 with a day to spare. This was when interest rates had just started going up, and I think they were slammed. Their customer service was not the greatest, and getting a timely reply from them was near impossible. They all did their job, and in the end we made it to closing, but it was stressful while we sweated it out.

They may be more responsive now since mortgage applications are on the decline. They do have great programs for veterans, and we used the Military Choice program and only had to put down 5% on a vacation home while we still got a decent rate. In spite of our issues, I'd probably use them again.

I would say to shop around a bit, but DON'T let anyone run your credit report until you selected a lender that you feel comfortable with and answers your questions completely. They should still be able to give you a rate quote. Also, I wouldn't limit yourself to CU's. Your realtor may also have a name or two to pass on. Avoid the "online" lenders if you can because you won't receive much personal service.

If you are a member of NFCU, give them a try. I purchased my home in 2014 through NFCU and it was so easy and stress free. My loan is a VA loan, but yours doesn't have to be. Because my checking and savings was through NFCU, I had direct deposits, etc, and I only had to provide my VA eligibility certifate. They checked my credit only 1 time and it was one of the easiest purchases I ever made.. Good luck!!
