I just recently applied for a new rental and they came back with an NA score. I also have a tax lien but I have been paying on it for almost a year now. How do I get my real score so I can get approved?

Is there a difference between a recent balance of NA and $0 on a credit report?

Not really, because a lot of times when you get a report from a third party furnisher(such as myFICO or TrueCredit) the information doesn't display correct.

Pull a report directly from the CRA to see what is really reported.
