My brother has asked me to help him with a derogatory item on his credit report. Late last year, he was involved in a car accident and his car was totaled. He had gap insurance, thankfully. The property recovery from the at fault driver's insurance paid about 700 less than what was owed for the vehicle. He got a letter from Wells Fargo, which financed the car purchase, indicating he needed to file his claim with the gap insurance provider. Wells Fargo was obviously aware of the existence of a gap policy. For whatever reason my brother didn't file his gap claim until about two months after he was requested to by Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo sent my brother an invoice for the remaining balance and my brother filed his gap claim the next day.

Anyway, the gap insurance payment to Wells Fargo did not occur until after Wells Fargo referred the delinquency to what appears to be an in-house collection agency. (This is where I come in). My brother's credit score dropped about 100 points and he wants me to try to fix it. I told my brother to call Wells Fargo and see what could be done. He's basically been told that once the collection hits, there's nothing that can be done, other than to contact Equifax. We got his credit score with a free trial on myfico.

I told my brother I'd be happy to write a goodwill letter to Wells Fargo, but all indications are that this would be a waste of time. If we forego doing that and just contest the collection through Equifax, it's my understanding the delinquency, even if deleted, could be added back on by Wells Fargo. Also, I understand that even though the credit reporting bureaus are supposed to share information, if Equifax were to delte, Transunion and Experian may still report.

Basically, I'm wanting to help my brother out and get this item off his record. He has a pristine credit record but for this blemish. Can anyone offer some advice?
