topic FYI: Student Loan Reporting DoFD Inaccuracies (verify yours) in Rebuilding Your Credit

Im just sharing this info as an FYI, in case anyone wants to verify their own information. Thats just what I do...take every account I have and 'fine tooth comb' it. I dont know, call it a hobby I guess.

I had 5 student loans in default, and 4 of them had dropped off due to DoFD. The one that is still on report shows falling off on 2015 (im actually about 30 days out of finishing the consolidation, so im not going to fight this and complicate things during that process. ive spend enough time with uncle sam to know to not give him any distractions). That got me thinking...how is that? they were all defaulted at the same time?

So i went to nslds.ed.gov (where you can log in and view your student loan acct info...you may have to go to pin.ed.gov first and get a PIN if you dont have one). The account in question listed the following:

Disbursement(s) and Status(es)

Disbursement Date Disbursement Amount Loan Status Status Description Status Effective Date

01/26/1996

$1,750

DU

DEFAULTED, UNRESOLVED

09/25/2009

DF

DEFAULTED, UNRESOLVED

09/27/2002

RP

IN REPAYMENT

09/26/1996

ID

IN SCHOOL OR GRACE PERIOD

01/15/1996

As you can see, I originally defaulted in 2002, and never brought it back to current. This had a status of "DF". In 2009, for some reason the status was changed to "DU". I dont know why the change, perhaps uncle same simply changed identifiers, or some other factor, but the fact remains the account has not been brought current since 2002, and therefore should have dropped off CRs long ago. What had apparently happened is that the system read the DU as a status change, and set a new DoFD for 2009. Just a systems glitch I guess...as many millions of people that have student loans, all the reporting HAS to be 100% automated. As I mentioned, Im not going to dispute this until AFTER the consolidation is completed, but at that time ill send in all this information to the CRAs for verification.

Im just posting this so others know they would be well advised to check the accuracy of their student loan info, especially considering how complicated it gets. For example, you may be 90 days behind, get a deferment (and therefore 'current' again without you actually paying the 3 payments), etc.
