Has anyone else gotten phone calls from this number? I thought it was an annoying time share company, so I picked it up to tell them to take me off the call list. They said it was a "prelitigation" line and wanted to verify my name and social. I repeated that I did not want to be contacted at that number (my cell phone) and then hung up. So I googled it and it seems lots of people have gotten calls, but still don't know who it is calling... When you call the number back it says it is disconnected. I've been getting the calls for a few weeks now. Just about the same amount of time that my number has been updated on my CR, no new pulls though.. any ideas?

If you call a number back & it says disconnected...it is a *spoof* number!!! It isn't a real phone #. This is how they get info. for fraud. I do not know how they do it BUT I use to get calls from D.C. caller ID read....congress! I know what spoof is but hard to explain. It is like hacking.

Yeah, I have read that scams work like that where a random fake number or even a real phone gets hacked and "routed through" to show on caller id. I'm just nervous b/c how did they have my social? Is it time for a fraud alert on the CR?

All I know is 704- is Charlotte/Salisbury/Piedmont-Triad area in NC. If that helps you narrow it down at all- any business in that area or once lived there that someone might have your info for fraud?

Did they actually say they have your social, or just that they wanted to verify your social? Chances are they were phishing and their method of verifying would be for you to tell them your social. Then, boom - they have it and your name and can go wreak havoc.

They said "we are trying to reach "me" and we need to verify that the last four of your social are XXXX." I told them not to call me, but the info was right... Hopefully nothing. I mean the last four doesn't mean a lot. I just thought it was credit related b/c I have been clearing it up for the last 6 months. All my accounts are out of SOL so they can prelitigate all they want.

If they call again...answer the phone....just with a last name....Buffett.......let them talk then say.....I have no idea who you are calling but this is a cell phone from the LA PD (pick a PD) and you are talking to Detctive Buffett!!! You must have dialed a wrong #. I have done that I also use a funeral home name.

Call your cell provider & get the fraud unit. Tell them the # and that it is not a working #....you know because you called the # back.....You do not need to tell them that you think it is a CA or anything!!!

Call the FTC and your AGs office and give them the phone # and tell them whats going on. For the AG & FTC let them know that you think it might be a CA because they knew your name & SS#.

Watch your CR!

Thanks for the advice. My voicemail only says the telephone number too, so they wouldn't have known where they called.

As another poster suggest, file complaints with the necessary people.

Also, watch the news and it might be happening to several people in your area. or call and report it to your news. If enough ppl report, they'll do an investigative piece on it or they do here anyhow.

Just tonite, there was something on the news about these kind of scams.

With the new Stimilus checks going out, they are pretending to be the IRS and "need your personal information to send you your check". C'mon it's the IRS, they know more about you then you do.

OT- but if you work for SSA can you tell me why when I get my ChexSystems, TeleTrack, etc reports it says my SS became available in Missouri in 1982, when I've had the SS # since 1980 in MO. All the reports have the same information, so they must be getting it from the same source.

The last 4 and your name would be unique to you, while there could be many people who have your name and the same first 3 digits of a SSN.

I just tell them to send me a debt collection letter and hang up. I get enough of these calls that I'm thinking of getting a private home telephone number instead of this listed one. I wish these CAs would just pull my credit report. Then they would know I have no delinquent debts.

The number belongs to a collection agency Asset Acceptance. They mainly deal with Gym collections

It is important to distinguish between phishing, real collection attempts on a old
debt that is yours, and a simple mixup. A few years ago I had some fun when a CA
was looking for a deadbeat with a name similar to mine elsewhere in the same state
whose phone was unlisted in order to avoid creditors so when they searched they
got MY number. The local police in the deadbeat's town were not able to tell me
much due to privacy laws but acknowledged the guy was very well known to them.

I ended up putting a fraud alert on my CR's for a while and sending a letter CMRR
to the CA basically saying "I am not the person you seek, I have never lived within
30 miles of the address in your files, I can document the fact that I have lived
in my current zipcode continuously since 1992, and finally I have never done
business of any kind with the original creditor you name, I have spoken with the
local police where the person you seek lives, please go away..."

After a few more phone conversations they did go away, and none of this ever appeared
on my credit reports (I checked them pretty carefully for a while!).

Mine says it didn't become available til the year I started kindergarten... I think maybe it has something to do with when your parents actually ordered your card or something??? I know there wasn't as much of a rush to get those things done "back in the day" unlike today where they have you complete that info before you even leave the hospital...

Yep, my parents didn't bother getting me an SSN till I was about 12 years old, now
the SSN is required to get the tax deduction so the IRS can match numbers and detect
two returns claiming the same dependent. I recall reading the first year they did
that, thousands of divorced couples were suddenly forced to agree on who would get
to claim the kids as dependents.
