I just noticed a hard inquiry from ATT Services back in March. I currently have cell phone service through them only and have for years. I called to see what the reason for the inquiry was. The rep told me the only reasons that she knows for hard inquirys are if you are adding a line to your account or applying for something like ATT Uverse which we did not do. She spoke with someone in their credit department who told her that the reason for the inquiry was because they were in the process of reporting my late payment to the credit bureaus when I made my payment. Of course it was not reported as a late payment because it was only 15 days late. Why on earth would they have done a hard inquiry due to a late payment? Even the rep told me it made no sense to her but then gave me the number for Equifax to ask them to remove it. Is this normal? Also I know I have made 10-20 day late payments with them before and have never had an inquiry.

I have had 3 hard inquiries removed year. Macys promised a soft inquiry but it was a hard inquiry. Their executive office refused to removed. I filed a cfpb complaint, and it was removed. I think Macy's removed because it violated some policy of theirs. I had a Wachovia hard inquiry that they had no permissible purpose. I have no relationship nor am I a customer of theirs. wachovia could not find a hard inquiry. Thus, I claimed fraud, and Equifax removed it. While one phone with them I had them removed a hard inquiry for commercial receivable that I have no relationship with. Thus, AT&T might have a right to do a hard inquiry but I doubt that its their policy for your situation. I would speak with their eo office if available or filed a complaint with their regulatory agency.
