For the first time in my life (I'm almost 54) I pulled all three credit reports from a recommended site that costs $14.95 with a 30 day free trial. My scores were lower than I thought (656 equifax, 670 tu, 676 experien). Equifax showed a 2012 charge off from an old paypal credit card that I don't remember ever receiving a bill for.but I did have a card from them. However, I did have a smart connect account and bill me later, both cancelled late last year. One 60 day late payment in 2013 on a huge line of credit that I'm paying on, two derogatory credit cards in 2010, both settled for less than the amont owed. One was from capital one which just upgraded my platinum to quicksilver and gave me a $1K line increase on a journey card. My latest fako tu score (cap 1 tracker) was 703, so that was off. Still, my scores were high enough to get a Chase Sapphire Preferred a couple of days ago and an amazon card last March. All accounts are in good standing, utilization near zero.

I'm still working with Bank of America (60 day late and a derogatory credit card history) to help with my HELOC. I've discussed it here. Considering my crappy scores, I think I'm in decent shape. I just hope my car lasts awhile. Getting a car loan would be tough and my interest rate would be very high.

If anyone can use help getting their credit history and score info, I recommend this identity guard. The service is very good as well. Also, if I can get decent cards with my credit history (AAoA 7 years with lots of TL's), maybe you can too. I wish everyone well, but be careful! I wish I had learned this years ago.

Your scores are far from crappy. Sub-550 is crappy. You're actually close to average, and if your auto loan history is good (no repo's, no late pays), I see no reason you would not be easily eligible for single digit auto loan rates. Maybe you're not going to be able to get the ultra low <3 percent rates, but I could easily see you getting 5-8 percent rates.

Thanks Norman. I appreciate that. Hopefully I won't need that new car for awhile. My Kia is still under 100K wrap warranty (82K on it). Now I have to figure out how best to use this neat little CSP I just received. I plan to do some traveling and want to take advantage of its perks. I guess I wouldn't have received it if my credit was truly crappy.

Start a relationship with a cu. Just a savings account or something. Then when you do need that auto loan they know you. My CU does car loans down to 1.34 percent (assuming auto pay from account) and will go to 2.29 percent with TU score at 660. A good CU is a great thing to have whether you need a loan or not!

Also, what site did you pull those scores from? Are they actually fico scores or ???

I signed up for identityguard.com. They showed three FICO scores from exp, tu and eq. The information in the reports were accurate. I just forgot about the paypal account and never paid it. It was derogatory in 2010 and charged off in 2012. I never received notification. I moved in 2010 and they may never have sent the mail to my new address. I moved again in 2014. Everything is current and up to date. I now have a Sapphire Preferred with a 7K CL. Part of my amazon CL was transferred via a sapphire customer service call with no problem. Life goes on.

*The scores you receive with Identity Guard® are provided for educational purposes to help you understand your credit. They are calculated using the information contained in your Equifax‚ Experian and TransUnion credit files. Lenders use many different credit scoring systems‚ and the scores you receive with Identity Guard are not the same scores used by lenders to evaluate your credit.

I don't see anywhere on their website where they say the scores are fico. They just say scores from TU EQ and Ex.

@Anonymous wrote:

Life goes on.

the scores were creditexpert, not fico and are updated every 90 days. The phone service was good but I think I will cancel the service within the 30 day trial period. I did get some useful information from the credit reports. I also signed up for Navy Federal Credit Union, taking the advice from someone on this thread. I'm back after 30 years!

Just be careful lusing those scores to base any decisions on. There are several cards that provide free fico 08 scores with your monthly statements. Credit karma will give you eaual monitoring for at least tu and eq that really is awfully good. Once again, dont pay attention to CK scores, but using them to monitor the underlying data is very useful and free. I have subscribed here for a few months and the real ficos are nice to see, and the knowledge I am making progress and getting to see that progress is worth the 20 bucks a month to me.

Once I get my house, I may well shut it off, but for now see what is really going on gives me the motivation to keep working at it. Once I meet my goals, I will probably not need that ego boost or whatever it may be, but in the building mode it has kept me focused.

And yes credit unions are awesome. Definitely better to be a member than a customer.
