As long as it isn't showing that he currently owes something don't worry about it. It has no affect on his FICO scores. The only way it would be harmful is if you had an outstanding balance or it was listed as delinquent and someone did a manual review.

http://www.myfico.com/crediteducation/whatsnotinyourscore.aspx

What's not in my FICO Scores

FICO Scores consider a wide range of information on your credit report. However, they do not consider:

Your race, color, religion, national origin, sex and marital status.
US law prohibits credit scoring from considering these facts, as well as any receipt of public assistance, or the exercise of any consumer right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.

Your age.
Other types of scores may consider your age, but FICO Scores don't.

Your salary, occupation, title, employer, date employed or employment history.
Lenders may consider this information, however, as may other types of scores.

Where you live.

Any interest rate being charged on a particular credit card or other account.

Any items reported as child/family support obligations.

Certain types of inquiries (requests for your credit report).
Your scores do not count “consumer-initiated” inquiries – requests you have made for your credit report, in order to check it. They also do not count “promotional inquiries” – requests made by lenders in order to make you a “pre-approved” credit offer – or “administrative inquiries” – requests made by lenders to review your account with them. Requests that are marked as coming from employers are not counted either.

Any information not found in your credit report.

Any information that is not proven to be predictive of future credit performance.

Whether or not you are participating in a credit counseling of any kind.

So I pulled his credit the other day so that we can get moving on buying a home together and California has reported a closed child support case. He has a 14 year old daughter that the mother has refused since the baby was 2 for him to see her, contact her, have any sort of relationship. He even asked for a picture of her and she refused to give him that. Also, as far as he knows, he is not even listed as her father on her birth certificate. We called the family court and they confirmed it was closed and it is no longer owing. Do we need to take her to court? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? Here is what it looks like on the report (from credit karma btw):

Last Reported

Jul 31, 2014

Creditor Name

ALAMEDA COUNTY FAMIL

Account Type

Child Support

Account Status

Closed - Paid and Closed

Opened Date

May 01, 2006

Closed Date

Jul 01, 2014

Limit

--

Term

--

Monthly Payment

--

Responsibility

Individual Account.

Balance

$0

Highest Balance

--

Payment Status

Current

Worst Payment Status

--

Date of Last Payment

Apr 01, 2011

Amount Past Due

--

Times 30/60/90 Days Late

2/2/42

Any help is SO appreciated!

I had a child support owing on my report - I called the state child support office and they said - nope you don't owe. I simply asked for it to be removed and they said they would remove it - Took about a week - but it was gone. (mine wasn't California tho)

DOFD only applies to the exclusion of a collection or charge-off.

The posted credit report item relates to a public record.

The court does not report to the CRA. The CRA obtained the public record information from their own search of public records.

Thus, a dispute of the accuracy of its inclusion in your credit report depends upon reviewing the accuracy of the public record.

Apparently, the court adjudicated some order for payment of something, and those payments were made.

They were apparently completed in 2014. The fact that no debt is now owed is not determinative of its exclusion date.

There were also apparently some delinquencies in those ordered payments that can remain for 7 years.

The entry is either a civil judgment, and thus has an exclusion date of 7 years from date of entry of the judgment, or it is an "other" category of adverse information, and thus has an exclusion period of 7 years from the date of occurency of when the "other" action occured. FCRA 605(a)(5).

More info is needed to determine its exclusion date and period. DOFD is not the determining date of commencement of the period.

Just dispute this with the bureaus and it should come off. They rarely ever verify this, I just assisted a friend of mine in the same situation reference a closed CS case and we disputed it and it came off and it was from 05. Best of luck
