The credit bureau said Ohio is demanding a substantial down payment on it before the end of this year. I can pay the thing off when we get income tax this season but not till then. How quickly Wil the state have a levy and come after my property?

United Credit Bureau seems to be just a national collection agency. They will say anything to pry the most $$$ from your pocket/purse possible. Ohio Tax Liens do not have a statute of limitations therefore you are on the hook for this $ forever (including interest i would imagine). I would try to contact the State of Ohio and see if you can make payments directly to them (avoid agreeing to any unrealistic amount, try to avoid an amount at all). I have no idea if this is possible but worth a try. To avoid Levy or Garnishment, I would start sending some amount every month to the State of Ohio when you find out who will accept the payments (even if it's $20).

The Ohio wage garnishment law protects the same amount of your wages as does federal law. Under Ohio law, most creditors can only garnish up to 25% of your wages to apply to your debts. Under some circumstances, a creditor may be able to take more.

Also... Once the lien is completely paid, It is marked "paid" on your credit reports and will remain on all three for 7 years after the fact. If you can't pay directly to the State... they make it pretty easy at United Credit Bureau.

I am paying a 13k Fed Lien that was almost 20k when i discovered it (1 more year to pay). You are not alone here for sure, lol.

Is there a certain amount of time I have to pay it in before they seize my house or car? The lien itself was filed in August, but I'm sure the debt is older than that.

They may take payment in full during tax return season. In my experience... most collection agency reps have been jerks who try to scare the money out of me. They would have done much better being polite and helping me make arrangement's to pay it off with the money i had. I hope yours are the latter. :]

edited for typos (slightly happy from xmas party)

They simply place a property lien against any real esatate you own, which operates the same as a mechanics lien - when you sell the property, the escrow company will require any liens against the property to be satified before escrow can close. The state can also place a lien against your federal taxes, so they may go straight to the state.
