Hello all!

My name is 'Joe' and I was referred to this site as a resource for help with credit problems. Thank you in advance for reading and for the help.

I am helping my girlfriend solve a big credit problem and I need any assistance in knowing how to attack this problem.

She has been the victim of ID theft from a close family member. This family member is a sister-in-law who asked for her help back when my girlfriend was a teenager and didn't know any better. My girlfriend helped her get a credit line, and ever since, this lady has been using and destroying her credit report opening accounts she has not even been aware of.

My GF has not been the best at keeping track of what her credit report has been reporting, so now we are in a critical and horrible situation with this lady.

I finally took the initiative to see what is going on because my GF knows her credit has been damaged by this lady because she has been unable to open credit lines for herself when she has requested it.

So tonight we looked into getting her report. We started first with the free annual government-mandated report from all three agencies, and we couldn't get past enough of the security/ID questions for us to actually see the report. It said we had to call.

So we tried Experian (tried to purchase it). Again we came across ID questions and we had to answer "none of the above" to most because my GF had no knowledge of the questions that it was asking, such as previous residences, a home loan, a recent credit card at a retail store ( as soon as June 2015!). So we had to answer NONE OF THE ABOVE to most, which resulted in Experian AND Equifax both denying us the online report because they couldn't verify enough of the identity online.

The only questions we could get right were about a recent car loan she got (whcih she had to get with the help of her mom as a co-signer).

So I am guessing we have to call and convince them that she is the right person whose social security number we are using for the report.

But can you guys offer any guidance into what we can do to start tackling this mess?

Courts, police report, call agencies, etc? Anyone with any experience it would be appreciated.

My guess is that a police report won't do much. We probbaly have to file some charges. Also we have to communicate with this lady that she has to stop this ASAP.

Thank you in advance for the help and for reading this. Any guidance is appreciated!

If indeed it's an identity fraud you will need to report to police. File the report and tell them you know who's responsible for it. After that it will take time to remove everything from file. It's kinda hard to do if you don't file a police report. It's also hard cause she let someone use her identity. How she should of help is take loan out for that person or whatever but not give them her SSN and all. Good luck with the long trip ahead. Again will need to file police report and get everything off record. Person will be charge with felony and will be required to pay back all the money plus restitution. Now if your gf isn't willing to charge the person then forget about it. Nothing can be done. Your girl probably can't even freeze her account cause seems like the person using her identity knows more about it then herself

Get a copy of that report, and send it, along with proof of her identification (DL and SS card), a copy of her reports with the fraudulent items clearly highlighted, and a written signed statement that she never authorized the indicated accounts, to each of the CRA's, with instructions to block those accounts in accordance with FCRA 605B.

Then go punch the SIL in the face again.
