So I got a phone call at work stating that I was being sued for a card that defaulted the same month and year that I turned 18, 10 years ago. I just pulled my credit report the other day and there was nothing on there related to this at all. They stated they had sent letters to my home, which I never received anything. He said he would email me information but hasn't. I called back and asked for the name of the company and the website, and they stated they didn't think they had a website and since I was giving them such a hard time instead of paying them they were just going to come to work to serve me. The guy said some other things on the phone that were questionable in retrospect. Does this sound like a scam? This is the first I've heard of anything like this.

Start by Googling the phone number they called from and any numbers they left.

The threat of coming to work to serve you is often a sign of a scam.

See what you can find out about the phone numbers.

Not too long ago I got a call, well actually my brothers ex-wife got one asking for me with the threat they were sending an officer to my office today. I knew that was a scam but googling it confirmed.

Sounds very questionable to me especially since they said they didn't know if they have a website, and then when you were asking legitimate questions they claimed you were being difficult so they would serve you at work.

I would say they are either tyring to:

a) Scam you into giving them money or, possibly even more damaging, get some of your protected private information to commit ID Fraud.

b) Disreputable collector trying to scare you into paying for a debt that is way past the Statute of Limitations if it was really ever your debt all, which seems like it was not, or someone else with similar name has a debt and they picked your name first out of a list of possibles.

Seems to me they realized you weren't falling for their tricks so they used the "serve you at work" line to get you off the phone quickly.

If they call again I would not give them any personal informat such as SSN, Acct #s, Phone #s etc..Then tell them that you are formally requesting that all further communication from them be in writing.

Yeah, I googled the number and it came up with a bunch of different registered complaints against it for a variety of reasons. It just definitely spooked me.

DJ0808 nailed it.

These debt collection scams are everywhere today. Take a look at FTC.gov and they will give you tips on what to watch out for....in general, if they call to say they are going to serve you, it's a scam

So what do you guys recommend doing if sensitive information was confirmed? I thought I was smarter than falling for one of those scams, but apparently not.

I received a similar call today saying there was a "judgment" against me, which I knew to be false. Called me by the wrong first name to begin with, then misstated what a judgment is. I let fly a few choice words and hung up. I reported the call and number to the FTC tonight.
