I was able to remove the Jefferson capitol by doing a complaint through the BBB.

Re the Verizon, the account is “inactive”, not really sure if that means it’s closed or waiting to become active again once I contact them lol. It shows a balance of $219. If I try to pay does that re-report and show a more recent date of activity? I only have a couple of years left until it drops off. Not sure what to do.

I have been repairing my credit for last 6 months and TU/EX scores are in the high 700's now. My issue is Equifax score is in the middle 600's because of 1 account. It was a verizon wireless account back in 2006. Last activity was 06/2013. I had paid out remaining bill and even asked them when i switched to AT&T if there were any expected MISC. charges that i should be aware of or need to pay. Customer service responded NO. Back then i wasnt really to concerned about my credit score and never checked. I also never received a bill from them re the $219 i apperently owe them. They sent me to collections (Jefferson Capitol) which i was able to remove from my report back in 2017. My question is, How should i go about trying to get Verizon Wireless to remove the charge off? GW/PFD? If i contact them will they re-report or do something to worsen my situation? Im very close to having great credit and i just want this to be off my report. I really feel like this is a wrong doing on Verizon Wireless for telling me that i would not owe anything since i paid in full when i was their customer. Please help.

Have you tried contacting Verizon about the alleged debt? The phone rep you spoke to could well have been correct but you might have been on the recieving end of a billing error. My sister once recieved a $500 collections bill for a hotel room cleaning, but they charged the wrong room, something like room 212 instead of room 112. I've personally recieved June bills for accounts closed in May.

The good news is that big companys don't want to be involved in financial errors. If you point out the mistake, they will usually appologize and correct the issue.

If Verizon holds that you do in fact owe money, see if you can request the tape of your phone conversation. If you were told no money is due, and then money is due, they are required to send you a bill. Until the bill is sent, you cannot be considered "late". I don't remember the specific laws about it, but maybe someone else can help out.

Did you pay the Jefferson collection or did you just remove it?

Verizon is tough. They are responsive but will through the book at you. Is it open and reporting a balance? If so, pay it to gave it report as paid and $0. Then you can goodwill them to death. 😩 I would get it removed from mine but it’s my oldest account. Paid and closed.

The CRA goes by the date of first deliquency when determining when an item will be removed of your credit report.

It is my understanding, the only way you can change this date is by brininging an account "current" by making a new payment agreement with the OC and then defaulting again. You do not reset the DOFD by simply settling/paying off an account. Someone please correct me if I am wrong though.

I like what the prior poster said though, about contacting Verizon about you being told you would have a zero balance, and seeing if you can get a copy of that conversation.

If not, I would just pay the balance and then goodwill the heck out of them.
