Welcome to the myFICO forums!

My condolences on the loss of your uncle.

For what it is worth, this is the letter I would send. Short and to the point.

Roger C Hochschild

President and CEO

Discover Financial Services

P.O. Box 15316

Wilmington, DE 19850

RE: Account Number **** **** **** ****

October 28, 2018

Dear Mr. Hochschild,

I have been a Discover customer since May 2016. During this time, I have enjoyed the customer experience with your company.

During the months of February and March 2018, I was dealing with the illness and death of a close family member. These events were very hard for me to deal with and as such, I am still in mourning due to his death. This is in no way justifies having late payments, none the less, is the reason for me neglecting my finances.

Up until February 2018, I made all my payment timely and since March 2018 as well. I have brought my account up to date as well as establishing an online banking account with Discover Bank and enrolling the account in autopay to prevent missed payments in the future.

I write to ask that Discover make a one-time adjustment to remove the 60-day late reported on my credit bureau files. I have worked hard over the years to get to the point where I can purchase my own home and this derogatory entry will be a barrier to this goal.

I sincerely hope that you will consider my request and prove once again, why Discover is miles above its competitors. I earnestly await your reply.

Respectfully,

attention: Customer relations
discover financial services
P.O. BOX 15316
WILMINGTON, DE 19850

To Whom it May Concern:

I have been a Discover customer since May 2016 and during that time, I have enjoyed my experience with Discover greatly. I am writing to see if you would be willing to make a "goodwill" adjustment to your reporting to the three credit agencies. I have a 60 day late payment on the above referenced account that dates back to the two months February and March of 2018. Before these two months of February and March, I have been trying to be an exceptional customer paying every month on time.

Because of my exceptional payment history over the last two years with the exception of two late payments, I would like you to consider removing the negative payments from my credit report. At the time of the late payment that occurred on March 2018, my uncle passed away and it made things very difficult for me as I am still in mourning, it has not been easy losing a loved one but I am trying to accept that he is gone. I say that not to justify why the payments were late, but rather to show that the late payments are not a good indicator of my actual credit worthiness. Despite the hardship of the situation I managed to schedule a payment to bring Discover current this following month and even have made an online banking account with you as well as enrolled in autopay. After many years of hard work, this is one of the few remaining blemishes on my credit reports. I have not fully accepted my uncle’s death, but I feel like I need to finally consider moving and hopefully be able to be an owner of a new home to make new memories because it is difficult living here where my uncle’s ghost makes frequent occurrences. I hope that Discover is willing to work with me on erasing this mark from my credit reports to make my move possible.

I have been a very happy customer in the past and hope to continue a long relationship with Discover. With today’s credit industry so competitive, I know how important it is to maintain good relationships with customers. Discover has been exceptional in my book so far and I highly recommend it to all my friends and relatives. I hope that you will deeply consider my request and prove once again, why Discover is heads above the rest. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

I greatly appreciate it that you took the time to read my gw letter to Discover please let me know if improvements is needed. Thank you in advance.

First one was way too drawn out to ask for a delete of late payment, I didn't finish reading it. Second one was much better and to the point.

@cjane1 wrote:

First one was way too drawn out to ask for a delete of late payment, I didn't finishI areading it. Second one was much better and to the point.

I agree. I had a very hard time reading the entire content of the OPs letter.

For what it is worth, when I wrote the revised letter, I did it from the point of view of an administrative assistant having to read through the President/CEO's mail. There is only so much time an AA has to spend reading and answering mail daily. The person reading the original letter might not feel that the death of an uncle is as devastating as the writer. I am not sure how well playing the "sympathy card" will work, however, the death of a "close family member" is a valid reason for an adjustment of your 60-day late reported on the Discover tradeline.
