jylynn - Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I have called them and and thought this was a debt from Macy’s. Macy’s could not verify it so I thought maybe it was from AMEX...But DSNB is Macy’s so now I am totally confused...It actually shows as AMEX / DSNB on my credit report.

This is what is listed on my credit report.

I sent a certified letter to AMEX / DSNB with my account number and told them to remove my it from my report since they can’t verify the debt. They sent me back this letter below.

Can someone please tell me what my next course of action is???

From AMEX
“We’re writing in response to your recent inquiry, regarding the reporting of American Express credit history. Please be advised, the Account Identifier number provides is not being reported by American Express.

We would like to resolve this matter quickly and we need your assistance to do so.

We need you to verify the account Identifier number previously provided and take one of the following actions:

-If the account identifier number previously provided is incorrect, please resubmit your request with the proper Account Identifier number.

-If the Account Identifier number provided is correct, please file a consumer dispute directly with one of the credit bureaus listed below because the Account Identifier number Xxxx is not being reported by American Express. “

I called Macy’s DSNB to pay off an old debt and they have no information on my account. I have them my account number and they still can’t find my info to verify the debt is mine. So basically, I can’t pay it because I am not in their system.

My realtor wants us to pay off some debts to get approved for a home.

I disputed it in the 3 credit bureaus and got back and automated reply that said:

“The information you disputed has been verified as accurate; however, information unrelated to your dispute has been updated. ”

06/01/2009 -Date Opened

Account charged off. $1,014 written off. $994 past due as of Nov 2018.
Status Updated 01/2016

What do I do next if I am not able to pay it off because they can’t locate my account???

This is really frustrating because we have finally paid off all our debt and it’s the last thing we need to do to get approved for a home.

Ask Macy's to remove the report if they can't find it.

Get a letter from Macy's saying they cannot find you or the account number and use that to dispute the account and to give to underwriting to show that you are trying to handle it. (I had to do this and it worked)

Sorry, I forgot to add that I did dispute this already with the three credit bureaus online but all of them verified the debt as accurate.

Could anyone let me know what to do next?

Informal statements that a creditor or debt collector cannot find account records is just that. Informal.

You need to file a formal dispute, preferably through a CRA, that specifically asserts that you do not owe the debt.

That will requrie the CRA to formally refer the dispute to the furnisher, and the furnisher to then conduct a reasonable investigation, and report the results of that investigation back to the CRA. That response is then a formal statement that they have conducted a reasonable investigation, and the results of that investigation. If they state in that response that they cannot locate any records upon which to verify the accuracy of their reporting, that would make a verification of its accuracy unreasonable, and thus subject to civil action.

If you still disagree, then you can file a civil aciton contesting the reasonableness of that investigation.

See FCRA 623(c) regarding the need for a prior dispute before you have the right to pursue civil action, and requiring that the basis of such civil action would be contesting the reasonableness of their investigation of your dispute, and not the reporting of inaccurate information per se..

Hello Robert,

Thank you for the response and guiding me in the right direction.

I just submitted my dispute to Transunion, Experian and Equifax. I sent them a copy of what I received from Amex (see letter above) to show them that they could not even verify the debt. All of this was through certified mail and I have kept copies of everything.

I am in disbelief because Equifax sent me a report saying "The dispute you filed with Equifax is complete. We verified that this item belongs to you. This account has been updated." On the next page it shows all the historical account information and shows it as closed off.

What do I do next? I am just trying to get this off my credit report. Even if the debt is not valid, I am willing to pay it just to get it off because I plan on buying a home next year. I even told the debt collector on the phone if I can pay it and they said you don't have an account with us.

American Express proper has nothing to do with the issuance of an AMEX card by DSNB, you have to deal with DSNB for all of it, I would now be writing the office the CEO requesting that the item either be removed or evidence of the debt be presented to you so you can settle it. If this fails to resolve the issue then a complaint to the CFPB may be in order.
