Did you get in writing? If not, don't count on it. They know what to say to get people to pay, its a common practice, and then they state its against their policy to send anything in writing. Did you write down the reps name and ID number for reference?

I called ATT directly and spoke with a rep who promised the collection I had for $782 (old cell bill) would be deleted from my husband’s credit report by Jan 2. All I see is the collection agency (Credence Resource Mgmt) reported now as PIF.

I could’ve called and settled with CRM for that result. Is it standard for them to report this way before a deletion or was I lied to? I paid it last Friday so recent.

Give them another reporting cycle and go from there.

Did you get it in writing or record the phone call? I recorded my call with LVNV and they just updated to PIF.

I sent a letter with offer of recording to my state AG (Texas), to which they replied. Then had to send recording by email and about two months after I received a letter from LVNV saying that they do not normally remove but would in this case. I also received a follow up from AG office.

It is common.

They usually process in stages, with the payment first being processed and cleared by their accounting department before any final deletion of credit reporting is processed.

It is common for a consumer to first see accounting that reports decreased or $0 balance before the final reporting of deletion of the collection. As suggested in a prior post, give it at least one more reporting cycle......

My concern would be that the promise to delete the collection was made by the creditor, not the debt collector.

A creditor has no authority to delete reporting made by another, so legally the debt collector is not bound by a promise of the creditor.

However, if the debt collector has informally been contacted by the creditor and agreed to delete after payment is made, you should be OK.

Again, they would likely not do any actual deletion until formally notified by the creditor that payment had cleared.
