I had 3 cards with capital one. BuyPower, platinum, and the quick silver. They were really good to me. I payed on time up until I lost my job in 2017. All the accounts were charged off in 2018. I'd love to get back in with them with possibly a secured credit card but I'm not sure if they'd even give me that.

Prequal has never worked for me even when I had capital one in the past so that's not a path I can take to find out. Has anyone had a collection with capital one and gotten back in? Not talking 7 years later. I'm talking maybe 2-4 years after. And if so did you start with a secured or unsecured? Thanks.

Absolutely. Two charge-offs not paid and I was accepted back with Capital One. They're paid off now. The last late payments were in January of 2016. So they were charged off after that. In August of 2018, having made no contact nor attempt to pay those at the time, I was approved for an unsecured (shocked me) Platinum with a $300 SL.

Do you have any open CCs?

You paid the charge off after being approved?

Yes I have a discover card that I kept up with thankfully and survived the hard times. I had it for 4 years. All on time payments 0% utilization. I have a car loan that's paid on time monthly. Also I'll have the Amex optima card soon since I've paid them off. Just waiting for the application.

Yup, had 30K+ in COs with them in the early 2000s that were never paid, no problem getting a new card in 2010, this was the first attempt at apping for it. They have a policy of a 1 year minimum from the previous CO before they will approve a new card.

One ended up in collections after. I had the two charge-offs when I apped. One charge-off Cap One, my QS1, was right at $4,000. The other one was much smaller. I honestly couldn't believe I prequalified for the Cap One card. I think it was almost immediately after that that my smaller charged-off Cap One card went into collections. I paid that one. I knew I had to address the large one before it went to collections also. So I called Cap One and set up a payment plan. While still paying that down, six months later I checked the prequals again for Cap One, and it showed the QuicksilverOne. That was the same card I was in a payment plan with. I apped for that and received a SL of $1,000, with credit steps to a $500 CLI in five months. A month later I got a car loan with Cap One.

That's why I love Cap One.

Cap 1 definitely gives second chances. I had a charge-off with them in 2007 that I never paid. Fast forward to 2015 and I had a new card. The limit started off super small ($500) but they moved me up to a reasonable limit pretty quickly ($10k). There's definitely hope. 😊

In a way glad because now I got the unsecured platinum CC, but I believe at the time I was approved for the secured CC they were graduating cards, oh well!

The pre-approval has always been solid for me, so I am not sure why they are making you cold-app.

Good luck!

Thanks.

Cap one gives second, third, and probably 4th chances....maybe more lol

I have seen plenty of posts where people have been let back in soon after CO/IIB, etc.

Now are those paid COs you have with them?

I ask because they are sue happy. They sued me for "only" an $800ish balance owed which turned into a $2-3k judgment/garnishment. I paid it back (via the garnishment).

I have been let back in as of Feb this year and got the bucketed/steps unsecured platinum CC w/SL of $300 that graduates to $500 and got my "early" CLI of $100 a couple days ago (now after over 7 years of DoFD from the CO, as it has since fallen off my CRs a while back) and I still have a paid cap one auto loan CO on my CR (EQ only, but they pull all 3Bs for any credit app) due to fall off in the next couple months.

I did app 2-3 years ago with Cap One when my credit scores were a little worse than now (and maybe the CO for the Cap One CC was still reporting) and was approved only for their secure platinum card, but didn't follow through with the funding because they wouldn't accept my reloadable debit card. In a way glad because now I got the unsecured platinum CC, but I believe at the time I was approved for the secured CC they were graduating cards, oh well!

The pre-approval has always been solid for me, so I am not sure why they are making you cold-app.

Good luck!

Wow they actually sued you for $800? People owed 5x that amount without being sued. That's crazy. I haven't paid the charge offs. They've been sold to a collection agency already.

Yes, they did sue me for $800.

Cap1 definitely gives 2nd chances. I had 2 Cap1 cards that were charged off in 2017. The platinum was a $1000 and the QS1 was about $2400. Both of these were unpaid in Oct when received a pre-qual offer. They started me with a $300 SL and now it's $500. I've learned my lesson and now my utilization is currently 1% and I pay my balance off each month.
