I'm confused about how LexisNexis is reporting a state tax lien (that I didn't remember or know about).

It has 2 records listed under the Lien section. The first record says "State Tax Lien Release" and the second says "State Tax Lien". They both have the same filing number, filing amount, and page number. The Lien entry (2nd record) doesn't have filing date or release date. The Release entry has no filing date but it has a release date years ago.

So does this mean that I don't owe the amount (in the 2nd record) anymore?

Or is it something bad? When I first looked at this report I assumed they had released the lien and somehow re-entered the same lien right afterwards. Because it's confusing how the release is the 1st record and not the 2nd.

I'm just concerned about this looking negative if I have to call for reconsideration on a credit card, store card, or other.

I'm sorry for disrupting this thread, I'm just confused because I was under the impression that tax liens don't show up on credit reports anymore as of 2018. Further, I've been told by various people, both here and in real life, that people with tax liens get mortgages all the time.

Last month a tax lien was filed against me. The IRS agreed to my payment plan but informed me in the agreement letter they would be filing a lien. I hope, since I am on a payment plan, that I won't have to worry about garnishments or anything unless I default. But anyway, since I'm going through this as well, it concerns me that it's on your credit report and that people are saying you could lose your job, or not be hired, or refused credit, because I was told different. So far my tax lien has not appeared on my credit report.

Anyway I was just hoping someone might have a little clarification. I see the name LexisNexis thrown around here a lot, but I'm not entirely sure what that is, I've never had to deal with them. Is it because the state sent you to collections or something?

I'm sorry again for jumping in with the questions, it's just the tax lien is new territory for me and I'm trying to learn.

Personally, this lien is not showing on EX, EQ, TU, but it shows on my LexisNexis report. I ordered that report because of trying to be careful. Seems like I could have easily not known for years otherwise.

LexisNexis seems different from the other consumer credit reporting agencies but it does get checked by at least one common credit card issuer.

It seems like federal and state liens are different.

I see. I had an entirely different idea of what LexisNexis is. I didn't know it was a report you could order, I thought it was a collection company reporting on your credit reports when you said they were reporting the lien.

That clears up a lot then, though I am still a little worried about some of the other things.

Yeah, it seems like LexisNexis has 2 reports too, and that they have this other company/division with a report. There are so many now.

I hope someone else can give you more information on your questions. I will tag the 2 that wrote those comments for you. @designated_knitter and @Anonymous

And regular consumers can order a report?

Does it report things like property ownership as well?

@gdale6 thanks for the list, I downloaded it, very useful! I clicked the link in it to get a free report.

Sorry again for the derail!

Lexis Nexis is a set of databases that has long been used by attorneys, private investigators and others to do what they do. They have gathered quite a lot of info about a lot of things that runs America now.

Accurint is what I was trying to think of. LexisNexis has 2 different Accurint reports. One is specifically for collectors to help find people.

CoreLogic Credco also reports liens, property ownership, collections, etc.

A credit card derogatory that shows in a credit report is far less serious than this tax lien which doesn't show up in standard credit reports. Don't dispute something you owe. If you don't owe it, you need to discuss this with the governmental tax agency directly and get them to remove the debt from your tax account. Don't try and stick your head in the sand by disputing with LexisNexis.

The tax authorities have super collection powers beyond a normal creditor. They don't have to prove that you owe the money in court and get a judgment to enforce collection. They say you owe and you're guilty as charged. No judge. No jury. Straight to execution. They can grab money from your bank account or wages at any time with no notice and generally make your life miserable leaving you with no money for gas or food. If you declare bankruptcy, the tax debt might survive and be non-dischargable which means you still owe it after bankruptcy. As stated by someone else, this lien can prevent you from getting a job or a mortgage.

I don't know what state you are in. But if the IRS is the KGB of collections, the Franchise Tax Board (California) is the elite Delta team within the KGB of collections. Get on a payment plan with them and pay it off. Don't go around disputing it or ignoring it in hopes it will go away.

I just received my report. Would there be a section for liens / bankruptcies even if there weren't any ? A section that would have that as a title then with blank information? There are multiple categories but none that specifically would highlight a lien.
