As an Authorized User you're not responsible for the debt. Neither Amex or Chase allow co-signers so you would have to be an AU which is a good thing here. I would pull your reports from annualcreditreport.com that way you have all of the information that you need on hand.

Due to your disability if you're unable to speak with the creditor yourself than I would hire a lawyer as mentioned above to act on your behalf. Some phone calls should be able to get those accounts in order based on the limited information that you have provided.

In regards to your accounts which you stated that you mishandled, you'll have the information that you need on hand after retrieving your annual credit reports. If you provide us with some information related to those accounts than we can offer further advice. You may be able to negotiate a pay for delete on some of those accounts which would remove them from your reports in exchange for payment.

I used be part of this forum years ago and it had been extremely helpful. Unfortunately my credit is in the dumps, mostly due to being 2nd signer on my ex boyfriends cards, and a couple mishandled cards. Im unfortunately not capable to really deal with these debts myself and need lots of handholding. I had a brain tumor removed that has left me with some cognitive issues and crippling anxiety, and even using my computer and phone is difficult. plus the accompanying depression due to watching things fall apart has made everything worse. I dont use credit cards anymore for fear of messing things up. Im in my 30's now, and I mostly want to fix my credit so that I can buy a place to live instead of dealing with rent here in NYC. I managed to save up downpayment plus a bit more, but I know I wont even be able to get approved for a mortgage. I found a local credit repaair company thats willing to help for $500 fee total that will cover a year of their services. But I wonder if this is in line with others. Or if there are other compassionate places that can help. The fact that I dont think my case is likely all that difficult makes me feel even worse by my inability to get it done.

Sorry about the curve ball that was thrown at you. So you said you have saved up for a home. Is there a way where you can come to an agreement with the ex that you'll pay off the debts if the ex closes the account. You can call the creditor also and there are some that will remove you from the account. It isnt easy. But its worth a try. So many come on here with the same situation. You try to do good and in the end it backfires. If your now considered a person with a cognative disability. Maybe a lawyer could get you out of the co-sign. Im just throwing things out there. On the bright side. Least you kicked cancers ass. congrats!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the reply and the well wishes. I had tried when everything happened, but I honestly dont remember what one of the companies said. Theyre mostly Chase and Amex credit cards and I was an authorized user, not even like I cosigned them. The accounts were closed and sent to collection a few years ago. I wish I could just get my name off from them.
