Would I be at risk if I did a BT to my Discover card if I used 90% of my credit line? I really want to take advantage of the 0% balance transfer offer, but I don’t want to be balanced chased, or any other adverse action. I would not actively be applying for credit during this time. I calculated my overall util would be about 30%.

I got the offer also. Dont need it. But. Disco is very rare to see balance chasing. Last time was yrs ago. But the poster had all kinds of issues. Without knowing your other cards. Should be fine.

I calculated my overall util would be about 30%.

Disco will not balance chase you providing that your payments are adequate. Id make sure to not pay anywhere near minimum because Disco is reporting increases in losses, that's when chance of AA increases.

None of that means that other lenders would or wouldn't take AA. Some are fine, others might jump on it.

If you are rebuilding, I wouldn't do 90%.

Just because it didn't happen to someone else, it doesn't mean it won't happen to you.

Conversely, just because someone else experienced AA, it doesn't mean you will.

So, in a nutshell, Disco is fine as longs as payments don't make it look like they may end up holding the bag.

Your other lenders, that's trickier part.

If you're planning on paying $35.00, I'd worry a little.

So, if you take the total amount you're trying to BT, divide it in 12 equal payments, it should work. To Disco, it indicates BT will be payed off. Once balance gets lower, making smaller payment won't be a big issue.

If you're doing 18 months, your first 3 payments should be larger (Not large enough to defy a purpose for doing BT, only to drop it down so it gives appearance of balance going down on the report), then divide rest of the balance by remaining number of months and set it to cruise

I am trying to pay off a predatory student loan that is costing me a fortune, and I’m close to having enough money to pay it off, but I am about $3500 short. My credit line with Discover is $3700. I would take the $300 that I’m paying for the student loan and apply it to Discover. I am expecting a bonus from work in August, so I would likely have it paid off then. I would likely choose the 12 months for 0% offer.

Go for it, it should be perfectly fine with $300 payment. I see no reason to continue bleeding money on SL with that type of payment.

Very much this. In essense you'd be treating the balance transfer as if it were a 0% APR installment loan.

I was literally paying a few dollars a month in interest on $3k in loans.

This is a private student loan that I got as a freshman in 2003, when banks were passing these things out like candy. I've been paying between $250 and $289/month for about 13 years, and I still owe $19,000 out of $20,000 from the original loan. Unfortunatley, I was under employeed for a long time after college, and I'm just now getting my head above water. This loan will end up costing me over $50,000 when I'm done.
