BUSTED!.....I could have fun with this one....

So it is my day off and my dog and I are laying on the coach toasty warm watching tv....all of the sudden the dog does her little quiet bark under her breath....this one signals someone has pulled up in the drive. Now all the cars are gone and mine is in the garage. So I sneak and look out the window. Their is a guy in a "well known company" exterminators truck sitting in my driveway. I think what the heck? He sits out there on his phone for about 15 minutes and then gets out. I of course hide out thinking I AM NOT ANSWERING THE DOOR! Anyways he places a paper in my door. So it is a Annual Termite Inspection Report on my house only the address is off by 10 and it is the neighbors down the street. The funny thing we passed without him getting out of the truck. He even checked what parts he inspected! LOL! Too cute since I know this house we are renting is full of termites and there is rotten wood on the backside (which the landlord wont fix) Anyways there is a card wanting a survey of how they did...I am thinking I should have some fun!!!

Ohhh you could totally ruin someone's day!! DO IT! I'm all about following the rules.

AND - if it "passes" and there really are problems, those living in the home may be in for big trouble at some point! In fact, maybe you should go straight to them and let them in on the fun.

Dh said the same thing....he was really upset that someone paid for a service and not only did they get the wrong house they didn't even get out of the truck to look at it. I don't know this neighbor but I will probably go down there tonight and let them know what happened. Of course I do not want to get this guy fired either....I don't know what was going on in his life yesterday. When I was a teenager I worked as a cashier and was upset because some guy was a real jerk and when I told my mom she told me always to remember that we don't know why people do what they do...that maybe the jerk in the grocery store had a wife that died that week...we never know. YES I KNOW THIS SOUNDS goofy and probably made me be too nice when things happen but I can't help it...I am flawed now...Thanks Mom!!! LOL!!!! Of course when I do get really really mad it is not a pretty picture!

I am sure the guy needs the job, but the homeowner has paid for a service and they deserve to receive that service, which I am sure we all will agree.

Solution #1-Check the paper that he left in your door, is his name on the paper? If so, try to call and ask for him. If he is not in, just leave your name and phone # asking for him to return your call. If he calls, just explain the situation and tell him he needs to come back out and pick up the paper he left in your door. Then strongly insist that he needs to do the correct inspection down the street.

You may want someone home with you when he comes back out. (The cautious side of me just kicked in!)

In my small town, I would have no problem talking with him on the front porch. It was instilled in me to always be nice to everyone, so I would ask him how long he had held that job, then tell him he was blessed to have a job in this tough economy. I would tell him to treat each home as if it was his own, then he will have a good chance of keeping that job. So, be sure to actually get out of your truck and make the inspections.

Solution #2- DH said to Tell him that the owner of that house has security cameras everywhere! So make sure you really inspect that property or he will rat you out!

Frankly, I don't know why you are cutting this guy some slack. He didn't do his job, but not only that, completely lied about it. It makes me wonder just how many other things he has lied about on the job and how much money this has cost his employer. I'm sorry if he was having a bad day--calling in is always an option. I had to put my dog to sleep about a week ago. It sucked, and I called in because I knew that I would not be able to handle my workload. It doesn't seem like this job would be horrible taxing or anything like that.

I would let your neighbors know, of course, because I am sure that they would want to know that they paid for a service that was not rendered and that they need not go with these lackadaisical people if there is a problem--I wouldn't trust them to fix anything at this point.

I would also let his boss know what he had done. If the house really did have termites, he just robbed his boss of a lot money by not letting him know that there was a problem to treat. Honestly, its this guys job to drum up potential business, if he is not doing that, then his boss should know. If there is a reason he did what he did, then his boss would already know about, but I just don't think there is.

I work retail, and you are right that people come in and have poor moods. I understand that things happen that make people not always act perfectly, but there is a point where people really should realize that if you can't at least be civil then you shouldn't be in public.

And I'll just add this --if the neighbors are hoping to sell their house, and they've been lied to and told that there are no problems, they could have a sale fall through after contract when a termite inspection turns up big problems.

An excellent example of how dishonesty on one person's part, from whatever motivation, can ripple outward and affect many, many people.

LOL! I knew the opposite opinions would be coming out.....took alot longer than I thought it would. I have to agree that it is probably best to let the neighbor know the whole story and she can take it from there.

Indeed. I strongly favor telling both the neighbor and the company full details of what took place.

I don't know if I would let the neighbor's know, only because I would assume that if they haven't received anything from the company, then they know they didn't get the service they paid for. But I would certainly call the company and speak with someone about what happened.

I think everyone has days where they're not on their 'A' game, but that's not what happened in this case. The guy didn't get out of the truck, it's not that he wasn't on his 'A' game, it's that he was stealing from the company and the customers of the company, by saying he was working when he wasn't, and could potentially be the cause of larger problems, ie: saying everything's okay with a house when it's not.

And while your mother has a point, you never know what's caused someone to be rude, there's a difference between someone doing a so-so job, and not doing the job at all.

Honestly, how did this guy even think this would work? Even if he got the correct address, leaving the note on the door isn't good enough. The people living there would obviously know he never came inside the house, and therefore never attempted a real inspection.
