What's a Jedi Knight, Uncle Matt?

My wife and I took a couple days off on top of the Fourth to visit my brother and his family in Chicago, and at one point I said to my nephew, "patience, a Jedi Knight must be patient." He asked, "what's a Jedi Knight?"

Somehow I managed to get well into adulthood without seeing any of the Star Wars movies (although I definitely knew what a Jedi was!). After my husband proposed, he told me that seeing all of the movies was a prerequisite to our marriage!

How old is your nephew?

My husband found a channel the other day that was showing all the Star Wars movies and you could not pull our 7 year old away from the TV. I still see alot of Star Wars toys at Toys R us etc.

Over Christmas vacation we had one dinner in a restaurant where the big-screen TV was showing bits from various Star Wars flicks, and my nephew was fascinated by what he saw, so I think my brother and his wife will soon be showing him all six SW flicks.

Same story isn't it: Star Wars and Harry Potter

1. Young hero to be

2. Strong super natural force within

3. The balance hangs on this young hero realizing and developing his abilitites

4. Face off between the young hero and the super evil super powerful villain

5. Very odd creatures intertwined

6. Alternate world or reality

7. Sabers vs. Wands

8. Brooms vs. X wing fighters

9. The Emperor vs. Malfoy

10. Vader vs. Half Blood Prince

11. Bounty Hunters and Disciples/followers

12. Young hero's parents killed by super evil character

13. Special lineage of hero

14. Inner Struggle of hero

Basically same basic plot of super evils, super powers, the struggle and all that goes with it. Just different characters, settings, weapons and twists.

Both epics derive much of their narrative power from tapping into very ancient archetypes.

Plus there's also a very strong ethical streak in these, the question of how to do the right thing in the face of insuperable odds.

There's also the Chronicles of Narnia. There's a specific faith theme in these, but it still hits many of these points.

And Lord of the Rings. (again, reflecting the faith of the author)

And A Wrinkle in Time, and so many of the other Madeleine L'Engle books. (Many of which also reflect her religious viewpoints on good and evil and redemption.)

Add in all the great sci-fi novel series for young people --Andre Norton and others.

Good youth literature hits so many of these themes --it speaks to young people who see injustice around them and feel impotent (because of their youth and social and economic standing) to do anything about it. It's a great way of challenging them to think, if I suddenly did have these powers, what would I do with them? Could I use them to make changes for the good?
