Windows 7 vs. Vista

Does anyone know the biggest difference in these two? I can't find anything that 7 can do that Vista can't. Everything that Windows advertises is nothing new. Vista does the same thing. I know that a lot people don't like Vista, but I just do not see what 7 does so much better.

Windows 64 bit 7 worked right out of the box with all my hardware and software. Windows 7 has some nice GUI features not in Vista. Vista sucked and Microsoft should have given it to the Vista users for free. Worth using.

OK, I'll keep it simple

Vista - Pain in the neck security settings and a resource hog

7 - Much less overtly security sensitive (Don't need a degree to get it to run smooth) and has a much better footprint. i.e. boots faster; runs smoother.

That said they both use the aero interface. They've made some out of the box changes to appearance, but nothing you can't do in Vista.

If you want to upgrade from XP to 7, please be aware that you will need to do a clean install. In other words, back up everything you need to save. This is what I would recommend anyway, but if you go from Vista to 7 you can upgade directly.

It's mostly performance and usability improvements. My wife loves Vista and she uses 7 now and says she notices very little that she found different. Mostly the core or the kernel is very compact, highly optimized and extremely fast using virtualization. Meaning even on slower machines it will run fast because it can actually emulate the resources the hardware doesn't have by virtually creating them to be used. This makes it faster, more stable and virtually globally solid foundation. The enhancements to the UAC with more variances allowed provides for a more user friendly behavior with less, do you want to allow prompts which most people didn't like. The display and menu systems used for navigation have been made more intelligent and works much more intuitively and allows you to find your stuff better and quicker. So overall in one glance, not much is different about them, but consider 7 leaner, meaner, and more intelligent platform that can run on virtually ANYTHING. Hope that helps.

I bought my PC with Vista, two months later they came out with 7. Honestly, do any of you think its worth the upgrade? I'm leaning on no, but not sure.

As they say and has been suggested, if it works and you have no problems, then just stick with it, no need to mess with it. HOWEVER, if your system is new enough that you have the upgrade option, TAKE IT, you will be glad that you did. Otherwise, leave it be, don't spend money JUST to upgrade.

Windows 7 could be though of as a major Service Pack (SP) release for Vista. It really is Vista with fixes, patches, updates and upgrades.

You should see a little better compatibility, fixes in security and networking ease, and it is supposed to be a little less resource hogging.

I have a FREE UPGRADE certificate for 2 laptops that I bought right before the W7 release, that I haven't done yet. But I'll do it just because it's free...gotta love free, right?

I have been using 7 since the development alpha release, more than a year and half, and had no problems with it. It runs on most machines without needing drivers. Nearly 90% of machines who have 7 installed on them, require you to provide no drivers. Only if you have some very unique or unknown device, might you still need to install a driver. Anyway, as long as it is helpful then I am glad, otherwise if what you got it working for you, then let it be unless you have a free upgrade available to you, I would say ABSOLUTELY, upgrade, you'll love it.

I never heard of that and did some research on it. I dont think I'm interested in doing that.

I just installed windows 7 from a free upgrade and actually really like it. Some of my Facebook applications run a lot better.....

How did you get the free upgrade? I think Windows should offer me one because Windows 7 was released just weeks after I got my laptop with Vista.

I just found out you are eligible for 7 if you bought your computer with Vista after 6/26/09. I bought mine 6/01/09.

I bought my computer in October and it came with a certificate for the free upgrade. I had to actually send away for the free upgrade. It took six weeks to get it which was kind of weird. My husband uses his computer more extensively and he actually bought Windows 7. He has been very pleased with it. Many of the programs he was having trouble with are running much more smoothly now.

I'm still using Vista Ultimate home edition. I doubt if I change OS anytime soon. I paid a good bit of money for Vista Ultimate.

I work in IT, the differences between 7 and Vista are mainly performance based. Vista was no different to Windows ME, it just sucked. A big memory hog, many programs didn't work, various issues with print drivers etc. 7 is alot smoother. I've noticed a big improvement on my work and personal machines. They boot quicker, programs load faster and run quicker. Many PC manufacturers offer free upgrades to Windows 7 from Vista (Dell for sure for any machines purchased after June 1st 2009). Search their website for Windows 7 upgrade and it should direct you to the appropriate site. You can also purchase upgrades from Amazon. The upgrade is absolutely worth it so if you can afford it, go for it.

I have a 64-bit HP running Vista OS. I bought Windows 7 and hated it. Uninstalled 7

and reinstalled Vista. I'm happy again. I personally don't understand all the gripes

about Vista. As someone who is a bit more computer savvy than most; I love Vista.

You'll crack, its only a matter of time. You know you can go to Sams with 2 other friends and by a 3 license pack for $150. $50 and your free. Not too shabby for a Vista-ectamy
