Anybody know how often car tags are renewed in the state of Florida?

you mean the tags themselves or the little stickers on the tags? The stickers have to be updated every year on the registered owners birthday, but you can buy 2 and 3 year tabs for the tags if you are so inclined so that you do not have to update every year.

Thanks for the reply. After researching, I'll have to pay $100 initial registration fee. Then there's a $46.60 for vehicles over 3500 lbs. My Envoy XL weighs 4432lbs. So does that mean my tag will cost only 46.60 after the first year. That is 3 times less than what I pay now.

During a normal week it cost me between $20-40. Many times a full tank will last the entire week. The truck has actually saved me a ton on money and that's how I was able to pay it off before time. I have a good morning and evening commute. I'm never stucked in traffic. That is the one thing I will miss when I leave Mississippi.

46 seems a little low, but not by much. the impact fee used to be so bad people would keep their cars registered outside of the state. they have since come down.

to give you an idea, i just renewed the tabs on my tags on two cars for 2 years, and it cost me 320.00.

This is what I found and maybe car registration and cost of tag are two different things.

Car Registration Fees

To register any vehicle in Florida that does have a Florida registration there is an initial registration fee of $100. In addition you will pay a standard registration fee based on the vehicles weight as follows:

$27.60 for vehicles under 2500 pounds
$35.60 for vehicles between 2500 and 3499 pounds
$45.60 for vehicles over 3500

looks about right! I had fees on my bill cause we were late, and other stuff, so I don't have a breakdown. But yeah, once you get over the impact fee the tabs for the tags are pretty cheap. I rmember in washington state them being over 300 a year. hated that.

Awesome! My current tag expires at the end of August 2010 here in MS. So, I'll wait to get a new tag when I get to Miami in August 1st.

yeah make sure you get them done asap. Florida has a 30 days waiting period when you move before you have to get the tags changed. if you do not do it within that time you can be fined, or even jailed. stupid i know, but the truth. Not that its likely to happen, but you never know how you might catch a situation. lol

It will be the done within a week of my arriving to Miami. That's why I'm planning so far in advance. Thanks for the info!

Now I just need to work on where I want to live.

if you have not got your tag yet....please check around for prices...I am from miami and some places (if you do not go to the actual Department of motor vehicles) charge alot of extra fees for the tags, the first year I went to this place near FIU and I ended up paying 70 roughly for an auto renewal when it should have costed 40ish if i went to the DMV. I would also suggest purchasing the multi year tag, since they seem to be in the increasing tag prices for revenue in Florida. Good luck, I live in tallahassee now so I just go down to Dept of motor vehicles headquarters so I dont get ripped off.

Thanks for the info. I won't need to renew my tag until August. That's when I'll be relocating to MIA to attend FIU. I'm going directly to DMV to get it.

Having worked for the FL DMV many moons ago, the stickers are renewed every year in your birth month,

so if you're born in September, you would renew every September.

Depending on what kind of tag you get, the yearly fee varies. $46.60 sounds about right if you just getthe standard

FL plate design (w/the outline of the state and the deformed orange).If you get one of theSpeciality Plates

(of which FL has about 8 gazillion of), you have to pay a fee for the plate +the Registration Fee. I had a personalized

Florida State University tag that ran me close to $90 a year with all the fees.
