Scanned receipts , warranties, IRS etc.?

I am thinking of going to scan and save for all of my receipts. I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with obtaining warranty service with a scanned receipt or dealings with the IRS. Any experience good or bad is appreciated.

Any time I needed a receipt for proof, it had to be the original, not copied.

For about 5 years I've saved all my receipts for the sales tax deduction. It really doesn't take up very much space. A gallon size storage bag is more than enough to hold a years' worth of receipts. My suggestion is to do that if you are unsure of the validity of scanned items.

Where do you keep the bag? I've noticed some of mine start to fade fairly quickly, which is why thought about scanning.

I keep them in a closet out of the light. Even the oldest ones haven't faded at all.
