Help! - My pet peeve about these boards

Okay, I just need to vent a little bit here. When I look at the list of threads on any given forum, I cannot stand seeing subject lines that say nothing more than "Help!" or "Please help!" or "HELP!!!!!!!!!"

Everybody needs help here. That's a given. That's why we're here. Folks with lots of money, perfect credit, and no debt don't come here.

I think the subject line should be used to give some indication about the problem that needs solving. I guess an exception would be the Smorgasboard, where cryptic subject lines are needed to lure us into eBay listings for used tampon machines and riveting discussions about french fries (for the record, In-N-Out fries are not good).

I have the kind of memory that would put me in the state hospital (you know, the special hospital) if it weren't for Google and the advanced search function here on the forums. A whole lot of memories, swirling about in complete and utter chaos. I leave my car keys in the car at night, or I would never be able to find them in the morning and get to work.

Besides, I rarely forget a thread or post from our court jester.

I think I posted a thread about that a long time ago. Why not start one - "how to be ignored and get no response to a question"

I now rarely bother to read them because I don't want to waste time.

OK, I'm pretty sure I get that one.

You have to realize that most of my knowledge of Latin comes from singing in Latin for 42-some-odd years, and except for Carmina Burana, these phrases would not be typical of the lyrics I've sung.

I suppose this would be a variant of the Jim Croce song "You Don't Mess Around with Jim."

You have the correct bodily function here. One modern medical term for the act bears a distant etymological relationship to the underlying Latin verb mingere.

Thanks, HTSU - just saved me bulldozing through my place to try to unearth my dictionary. I could translate (or at least guess fairly accurately) just enough to frustrate me because I couldn't for the life of me remember the other parts!

'Illegitimi' I remember from back when. Those others, courtesy of you, MV and MattH, likely were too horrifyingly improper for my very straitlaced Latin teacher to share with us innocent students.

About all I can remember anymore is 'Cave canem' (Beware of the Dog), 'in media res' (in the middle of things), and 'Gallia est omnes divisa in partes tres. Quarum unam incolunt Belgae..." (something along the lines of 'The whole of Gaul is divided into three parts. The first part is something-or-other the Belgae...). That last bit was the opening line of a paragraph we all had to memorize and recite, one year.

I don't think you'll find these phrases in the Vulgate or the Breviary. My wife was a Classics minor and biology major and I had a fairly good Jesuit education before I went into Science myself. Some of our favorite Latin phrases I don't dare post here because even Bowdlerized translations would violate the Terms of Service. Don't forget the word graffiti was invented by archaeologists studying Pompeii -- those ancient Romans could be quite explicit...
