Seeing 2x 2080 Ti performance at $699 has me thinking I'm going to finally upgrade my 780 Ti to the 3080.

Since I have my PayPal Key, I'll pick one up and take the rest of the quarter that's left and buy an Amazon reload and then use my Disco next quarter on Amazon to build a Zen 3 machine around the new graphics card and finally retire this Devil's Canyon 4790K dinosaur.

Pretty much gonna be just in time to play Cyberpunk 2077.

Super glad I didn't build a new machine last year like I was originally planning because I would be way upset right now.

I was not aware such specific topics could appear here. I haven't done PC gaming in 8+ years but still follow tech news. This thing sounds like a beast. I doubt most would have a practical application for it. I don't know if it would be worth it for anyone with a card as far back as the 1080 series but you are far beyond that threshold. I'd say you'd see a noticeable performance bump across the board.

Pull the trigger and max out them points!

Smorgasboard is where all the other OT goes. As long as its within the ToS, it can be discussed here.

Yeah I have been holding back waiting for a true generational performance leap and this seems like the one.

I figure I'll get a RTX 3080 and I'm going to see what happens with the CPU launches. I am leaning towards AMD specifically because I believe that Zen 2 powering consoles is going to lead to more optimization for AMD and because Zen 3 is said to have less problems with latency which would close the gap considerably on top of the beating their cores give Intel without redlining the frequency but otherwise, 10700K is a safe backup.

I want to keep my total budget below $2K but since I'm building a machine to keep another 6-7 years, I am not going to totally cheap out on it.

Since Disco gave me 0% for 12 months, I can just go ahead and build it and make payments on it.

This is actually what I initially was going to use the SavorOne I got in June for last year but something told me to wait.

I don't game as much as I used to but when I do game, I like to game with everything cranked to the max lol.

Gamers really do push the envelope in the hardware game! Not a gamer here, I do a tiny bit of video editing and drive three monitors. Currently running a pair of AMD 7790's. Built this machine 7 years ago. Hopefully will get a few more years off this machine though I do have a Dell T7500 sitting here that I picked up cheap from work (surplus they sell to employees first). Need to get some drives in it but hoping to make it my Windows work station at some point. May have to look into the nvidia options when I do build a new machine, it used to be that AMD was the go-to for us Linux fanboys because they had really good open source support, but nvidia has been releasing open source drivers as well.

So I recognized the thread title was about video cards but don't know much about video cards beyond that...

I play modded Skyrim SE and Fallout 4. I currently have an AMD Radeon RX 480 (it came with my computer).

I usually buy a pre-assembled computer at Costco. I have a very large monitor I like (Dell U3818DW) but may upgrade my desktop tower soon.

Any thoughts as to a particular video card I should try to get in a pre-assembled computer or purchase separately? Or are current "base level" video cards quite sufficient for those now-older games?

People who go AMD with new cards end up having to wait months sometimes before drivers are available where nVidia has binaries on day one and nVidia performance is still better than AMD's performance. There are also stability issues with games on Linux that nVidia just doesn't suffer from.

But if open source is important, AMD is definitely the way to go.

I have a G-Sync display so my GPU is going to have to be nVidia regardless but I have always been happier with nVidia than ATI. I have not owned an a GPU since the Radeon 5830 which was still ATI - I have owned the 9800 Pro, X800 GTO2, and 5830. Had problems with all three of them - at least two of them died but I don't remember what happened with the GTO2. I know I have had more driver issues with ATI cards than nVidia. At one point I had to change drivers depending on what game I was playing.

I do use Linux myself (I started with SuSE and a number of other distros my dad had lying around on CD back in 1999 or so), I dualboot Mint 20 and Windows 10 Pro, and I have never had any issue with my nVidia cards through the years.

That Dell monitor is 1440p so you can absolutely tweak your settings to where the RX 480 can't smoothly play since that was a mostly 1080p card. But if you're not a settings maximizer like I am, you can make most graphics cards work. I personally wouldn't recommend buying anything less than a 5700 XT if you're going for an upgrade but it's overkill for what you're doing right now.

Well it seems EVGA isn't releasing prices until launch day and neither nVidia or EVGA are doing preorders which means bots are going to snatch up the limited stock and we will have $1200+ 3080s on eBay... 🤬

I guess that means I'll try to get one but if not, I will just keep my money.

It seems like you have your ducks in a row @Anonymous ! I do hope you get one of these new cards (and come back and report the DP's lol). I am over here getting excited for the PS5 and it's GFX card which is likely comparable to a 1080/2060 and the super snappy m.2 NMVE SSD.

I love PC tech and putting things together but as I got older, as I worked 8+ hours in an office on a MnK, the lean-back experience provided by a console was just more accomodating. Excluding my Nintendo Switch, all of my gaming is done on the PS4. I have a crew I play with on an almost-daily basis (including my S.O.). I know it's not the snappiest or sharpest looking piece of tech but it keeps us together and having a blast. The game I play (Destiny 2) has confirmed they will be enhancing the game for the PS5 and providing upwards(?)-capability so that people on PS4 and PS5 can play together.

How i wish I could get an RTX 3K and just smush it into the PS5...but it's a pipedream...for now.

GL and I'm sure you know already but i'll reiterate about reloading Amazon, do it over multiple smaller payments is what I read here.

Unfortunately, the XPS 13 line still doesn't offer dedicated graphics options so I'm stuck with integrated for a while yet.

@SecretAzure wrote:

Oh I have the consoles too. I have a PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, Switch, PS3, 3DS XL, (new) 2DS XL, and a Wii U.

My computer has an HDMI running from it to my Sony X900F TV and I usually play games in my recliner in front of the TV rather than cramped in front of my 34" monitor at my desk with the gaming keyboard I don't like and the uncomfortable as all heck chair.

I play games on whatever device fits my needs. I got the PS4 Pro so I could play games like Detroit and Final Fantasy VII Remake at their best. I have the One X because my TV has decent HDR. However, I do miss the PC's graphics capabilities. Sure I have to fight with Windows and driver issues instead of the press a button and play experience on a console but when it all works, it's beautiful.

As for the Amazon reloading, Disco hasn't had any issue with me doing it before but I may not really bother with it. We will see.

I did find out that EVGA is using captchas to prevent bots from getting the stock when it launches but I don't like ordering directly from them because they charge for shipping. If that's the only way to get one this month though, I'll probably suck it up and do it.

I imagine with the high TDP of these cards that a small laptop wouldn't be able to sufficiently cool it without being bulkier and louder. Even the lower end dGPUs are 30+ watt parts.

Cool! We do seem to have similar mindset in how these things are tools and we use the best one (or only one) for the job. I'm rocking the Sony 900E 55"and I have a dream that a second stimulus check will come so I can get the 900H 65" for the living room and migrate the 55" to the bedroom where I have a broken TV.

The PC world just doesn't make sense for me atm or I'd be playing a lot more games. My last desktop had an EVGA GTX570 lol. It was the best I can do at the time on a minimum wage income.

We even think the same on the stimulus. I already decided if they give us another one, I'm getting the X900H (55" though because it's going in my bedroom) since it will be upgradable to HDMI 2.1 while the X950H won't be (because Sony gonna be Sony).

Honestly I'm looking to build because I keep my computers for ages. I mean I built this computer in 2014 and the only upgrade it has seen was I upgraded the 4770K to a 4790K. It's got a Maximus VI Formula board (because I guess I was feeling like being extra at the time since I could have gotten by with a much less expensive board), an EVGA 780 Ti Superclocked w/ACX cooler, 2x256GB Crucial M550 SATA SSDs in RAID0 for boot, a Seagate 2TB SSHD for storage, Corsair H100i for cooling, Corsair HX750 for the PSU, and 32GB (4x8GB) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 (its overclockable but I've never messed with it) in an NZXT Phantom 410.

I really just want to do 4K HDR gaming but I don't *have* to upgrade right now. I could just as easily pick up a next gen console and save the rest of my money or just not buy anything at all and keep what I have.

I DO need to do something about the H100i though if I'm going to keep this machine. The fans are obnoxious and I'm quite frankly amazed the thing even still works considering it's been 6 years and these AIO liquid coolers lose coolant over time which I have definitely noticed with higher temps and louder fans. I installed it in push config though which means taking the motherboard out to change the cooler :/

And yeah, the 780 Ti is my first flagship card I ever bought. I had a Radeon HD 5830 before it, 8800GTS before that, 7900GT before that one which failed and EVGA replaced it with a 7950GT.

Way to geek out! I would've been jealous of those specs back in my PC gaming days lol. I never touched water-cooling systems. They intimidated me and I wasn't confident I could get it to work properly.

A new PC would be cool, if you want consistent 4K, that'd be the best way to go. Many PS5 games announced will only be 4K in certain settings or some lower resolution and then upscaled. That PC needs a vacation.
