I have no idea! I have concerns either way. My concern with the bailout is that the banks (investment especially), CCCs and lenders will expect future taxpayer bailouts, so they will continue gambling with deregulated derivatives. Without the bailout, I worry about our economy falling into a very deep and long lasting recession with housing prices dropping over 60% within a couple of years and unemployment sky high.

I believe the S&L crisis cost about 150-160 billion, with a taxpayer bailout of more than 120 billion. This is what started our huge budget deficit. So, obviously what is happening now is far worse than the S&L crisis.

Sadly, if we go down, so might the rest of the world. Just look at the markets around the world, and just today, two more British banks failed. There are also a lot of rumors going around that the next ginormous bank in Europe to fail might be Fortis.

I don't know much about Fortis, but I do know they have about 1,031 Billlion in assests.

Fortis - The European banking and insurance giant was partly nationalised by the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7642156.stm

.....
Fortis is one of the largest European financial institutions to be bailed out by governments as result of the current turmoil in the credit markets.

It was seen as too big a European bank to be allowed to go under. Its assets are greater than the size of Belgium's annual domestic economic output.

Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme said the bail-out showed Fortis would not be allowed to fail, after its share price plunged in recent days.

Mr Leterme said: "We have taken up our responsibility, we did not abandon the savers."

Insolvency fears saw the company's shares fall to their lowest level in more than a decade before the deal was announced.
