Question: Sock Drawer

Good evening MF,

While browsing the forums last week, a question came to mind:

To those of you who SD cards you no longer use, do you actually keep them in your sock drawer? Or is that just catch phrase?

And another one, to those of you who have quite the collection:

To some of y'all have 20+ or 30+ cards, how do you organize them all?

When I was really young, I collected NBA MLB & NFL playing cards briefly, and had a binder w/ clear plastic pages and a slot for each card. I can imagine that'd be a cool system.

I'm interested to see what systems the pros use! 😆

The term "sock drawer" is just a catch phrase for cards that are no longer being used for one reason or another. I keep my unused cards in the safe, personally. I also keep all sock drawered cards in a credit card keeper I found on Amazon. It's four cards high, each card goes into an individual plastic insert, with an outside faux leather soft shell that uses a snap close. There's no right or wrong way to keep your cards, only the way that works the best for you.

@Adkins I appreciate the response. I've never owned a safe. But that's a great idea. I grew up in place with a lot of crime and robberies. A safe was an easy target.

I went property shopping for my first home last month. I may use your play, after I close. And finally get a safe.

I got one of those obnoxious wallets that can carry something like 20 cards along with a passport and other stuff.

I don't have a safe but good luck finding it in my junk. I don't actually know where it is right now haha, in one of the boxes presumably.

Agree with @Adkins that the sock drawer is just a nick name for unused cards.

I carry many cards in my wallet (too many actually!). My unused cards are kept in a desk drawer in my study. I don't bother with a safe. I use a checkbook-sized tall leather vest wallet that has multiple slots on each interior side and several plastic insert pages in the middle for additional cards. I've also got many dozens of old outdated cards in a stack at the back of the drawer! Lol 😂. .... a true My Fico'er that doesn't even throw away used or closed cards.

I check my cards often through mobile apps so I'm aware of any new charges.

I have a small wall-mounted gun safe in the master bedroom closet behind hung clothes. But that's basically for the gun, some cash, and some passports/important papers. My "sock drawered" cards are in a filing cabinet. Only recently did I think to myself 'hey, AOD may not last forever, let me use those sock drawered cards here and there to keep them alive'. I used my citi Double Cash for a $4 T-Mobile Little Caesars pizza the other day. Now I need to use the others....

When I was a kid in the '80s and '90s, my grandmother would reach into her purse and grab a stack of credit cards bounded together by a rubber band. That is probably where I got the idea. My "sock drawer" cards are easily accessable in a safe, rubber banded together in a stack.

I do keep a binder with clear business card holders in which I have placed virtually every credit/debit card I have been issued for the past 25 years. I am missing one debit card that I snapped in half after it was declined for being expired (the idiot credit union sent the replacement card a month before hand and it had very specific to and from dates so I kept in in the envelope and forgot) and I cannot find two of my Kohl's cards. Kohl's used to love redesigning their cards back in the day. Between 2001-2013 I had 7 different card designs. Although I closed that brick nearly 10 years ago, it is still the same, awful clear design as it was back then. I wonder why they stopped redesigning them.

Do you have an old "Holiday Erickson" Gas Card or a "Shoppers Charge" Card or the originial "Discover Card" (Also Novus)? Shredded mine so I did not leave them around and now I would like to see them? Kept no old cards.

Do keep debit/creditcards in a folio thing like @Adkins and @Aim_High referenced and for me it really works!

@Anonymous no, Sir. I am in my early 40s. I do actually have my father's orginal, unused 1986 Discover Card in my binder. It is the only card not belonging to me that I have.

Like others, credit card wallet so I can put my credit cards, AU card, old licenses & student IDs (because of the pictures!).
I have a fire-box/safe (lockable, hangs out in the closet, but has all of the most important paperwork to grab in case of fire or emergency, which is why I call my 'sock drawer' my 'sockbox') that I keep them all in. Every quarter it gets all rearranged as I take credit cards in/out for the spend. Most of my cards are in my Samsung Pay wallet, though, so even though I have cards in my actual wallet, I rarely take them out.

Everyone's different. I label and organize my logs with the following:

DD = Daily Driver = Cards used multiple times per week/month = Stored in Wallet

OU = Occasional Use = Cards used 1x+ per 2 to 3 months = Stored in Wallet or Safe

SD = Sock Drawer = Cards used 1x+ per 5 to 6 months just to keep them open and not fall into the dormant Ex category. = Stored in Safe
