Samsung S23 Rollout is Underwhelming

I've been excited for a few weeks now about the possibility of upgrading my S21 to the new S23... I don't think it will be happening anytime soon, though.

The trade-in deals are terrible this time around... only $200 for my S21 (and only $250 for an S22). The few new 'bells and whistles' I'd be getting just aren't worth $600 (and that's after I give them my perfectly working S21).

If Apple ever switches to USB-C I might even consider taking a peek over at the dark side, LOL.

I looked at the specs..camera, camera, camera. I am not a photographer, I don't need telescope or microscope, so dumping $1100 yearly on something that's identical to what have is starting to make me feel a bit on dumb side of ledger.

Same here - I'm not a photographer.

I skipped last year, since it was really just more of the same (I have the base model S21), but I figured the longer I wait the lower the trade-in value will be, so at some point even if the improvements are marginal I should probably upgrade anyway. That said, there's only $50 difference in the trade-in value between my S21 and last year's S22.

I was willing to pay up to $300 (+ trade-in) without much thought, possibly $400 with some consternation. Paying them $600 -and- giving them my like-new S21 is just too much.

I'll wait until Prime Day this summer. There will most likely be a deal of some sort, usually with a bunch of extras I care nothing about, but at least I can sell the extras on eBay and get the price back down to something reasonable.

I'm actually the only one in my family who doesn't have an iPhone. They all got in early and have upgraded through the years but I was poor so I went with a cheap android as my first smartphone around 2012 (yeah, I was a late bloomer). The rest is history...

To be fair, nobody has ever complained to me about our group chats being limited (I hear that's a thing with iOS folks). I'm not a power user so I'd probably be fine with either, but since I'm already "in" with Samsung it's always made sense to trade-in and upgrade.

Some people have suggested the trade-in deals might improve in a few weeks; I'll continue to check. My S21 is perfectly fine, though, so there's no urgency.

That's definitely a possibility. It also makes sense from a profit standpoint, since rather than troubleshoot a bricked phone via a physical port a replacement would be required.

It would be really neat to see what they could do with USB-C, though. (My own preference for USB-C is because I have a box full of chargers already.)

For me going from S10+ to the Ultra is probably worth it but trade in deals seemingly are only good when you do it with carriers. They'll knock off $1000 for a trade in worth at least minimum I can't remember what it was but difference can be anywhere from free for base model to only paying $300-$400 for Ultra through installments you can pay right away anyways

...but thing is my phone is still running pretty great. Had battery issues but replacement it at a local shop with OEM was like $40 and when screen shattered at the time it was worth it filing claim through credit card

Dunno I'll probably reserve it tomorrow but I acknowledge it's because I want a shiny new toy to play with 😂

I find Apple's reticence with this issue frustrating from a consumer's point of view just because their recent tablets and laptops use USB-C

Yeah, I think it's the "ooh, shiny!" factor for me as well, LOL.

I agree the carrier deals can be awesome. For those who only need a single line the monthy price just doesn't make sense, though. I'm on the AT&T Prepaid $300/yr for 16GB/month plan, and it's been awesome. I guess it could be argued that for what I'm saving I should just pay up for the new phone, but I'm too cheap.

I suspect it's all about $$$.

If they ever change over to USB-C, a lot of dongles, accessories, etc. that are now not compatible will likely be an option. Then again, knowing Apple they'll probably figure out a way to make non-Apple USB-C accessories incompatible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Speaking in broad terms I think we reached the limit on what companies like Samsung and Apple can add and innovate with phones. I guess if you're in it for the cameras whether it's for professional or personal use I can see it being worth it but at these prices a person does have to think about it more. Only thing they can really improve now is cameras, battery/charging and adding gimmicks per say like the S--Pen for the Ultra series so it's a hybrid phone/tablet

I wanna love it and I know it's what's on the inside that counts, but it's just fugly.

Back in the day I was actually a big fan of the Nexus... I never had one, but it was my insprirational phone for a few years.
