Embarrassing moment at work

so...I went out on a client meeting and enjoyed laughing at the CFO's jokes and such....(in my head I noticed no ring)

Anyhow as the Controller walks me and my colleague out she happens to mention that he is single and has been trying to fix him up for years....

My colleague had a ring on her finger, right in front of this persons face.....so I felt it directed at me....

Any how I did mention that he was quite cute and would obviously be interested....

She told me to stop by anytime.

Any how, I am not that girl.....yes interested, but not willing to risk humiliation on my part to extend myself.

My new nickname at work is Mrs. D (his name is actually Dirk).......so imagine what office women do with that name considering its fame on Boogie Nights!!! I was the joke today (and really I didn't do anything, other than agree he was cute and of interest).

He is older than I am by a good 10 years, but less than 15, incredibly attractive and smart.....I am hoping to get my colleague to do the work for me with our new Controller friend because I am way too shy!

..but still haven't a clue of what to do.....so I shall sit by and do nothing. Sigh...

Sorry if this might be harassment to the men of the group!!!!!

IMHO I think getting involved with someone at work is a very bad idea. I try real hard to seperate work from my home life.

Well, while DW and I dated before working together, I was her boss and did let her go from the job the day we got married. I knew that while she was in the office she wanted to be the office manager AND DW. It is impossible to reconcile both.

Since we probably spend more waking hours (not counting napping at our desks ) at work than anywhere else, it's almost inevitable that this is going to happen, but it can blow up in spectacular ways. Not to mention that if it does go somewhere, that means staring at the same person for nearly all your waking hours, plus presumably nights as well.

After that first fun crazy period, that might be a bit much of a muchness.

He might be handsome, wealthy, smart, very interested in you, et al., but there is an old saying for this situation.

Don't eat where you poop.

Translation is never date someone at work. If it goes sideways, all sorts of bad stuff can happen, and the person in the lower position likely gets let go.

With that said, lots of people do meet their future spouse at work, and I do know of lots of folks who are still happily married after meeting a spouse at work.

If it's a larger company, there's more of a chance, should it go sideways, you won't have to see each other and won't have to worry about uncomfortable run ins. In a smaller company, you might not be able to get away from one another and someone might have to quit.

Many companies have fraternization policies that prohibit the hiring of spouses, relatives, etc., but I've never heard of a company prohibiting dating someone in the workplace. There probably are some. I just never heard of it.

With a corporate officer however, they might fall under different guidelines and might not date in the workplace out of fear of sexual harassment suits.

Whatever you do, don't go to HR and get an opinion. They will say no to dating him and nothing good could come of it.

If you really like him, there's probably no harm in asking your friend to ask whether he's interested. You might become the butt of jokes for a while, but you might end up as the real Mrs. D. enjoying the sweet life.

He is an employee of my Client....So we don't work together...He was in the meeting because we were discussing the financials of the Company (and he is the finance guy)...

The only time I would see him would be once a year at renewal time.

...Oh well I'm not holding my breath.

I'm a sucker for the cute story of how people meet, but I am a realist so this cute scenario most likely won't blossom into something more.

Hi Mel. Go for it, but make him make the move. Put out your signals, but make him approach. That's my opinion.

What do you do, if you don't mind my asking? Sounds like a meeting that I would have had with my clients in the commercial lending days.

I would shoot him a very simple email that said something to the effect of "If you would like to ask me out for {insert- coffee, a drink, lunch, mud wrestling}, I can think of no reason to refuse".

He then takes the bait or he's not interested. I doubt he is a game player given his line of work and there is less chance of embarrassment if there aren't a bunch of other people involved. I would like that approach, it's how I met my DW.
