The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program paid off my entire loan!

I can hardly believe it. When I applied back in June I expected to maybe get 1k paid off because of the current economy. However, I received a letter in the mail yesterday from Sallie Mae congratulating me on my loan forgiveness approval. In total they paid off $17,160. This news comes at a great time because I will be closing on my brand new home in a few weeks.

Congrats! I had 20K out of 60K forgiven when I agreed to work in the Substance abuse field out of grad school (Clinical Social Work) at an inner city agency. I could have had all of it forgiven if I stayed 2 years longer, but I moved into a higher paying position. It's a great program. I'm surprised how many folks don't know about it.

Again, Big congrats. It must be a great feeling!!

SOME teachers can get their loans forgiven -- they must either teach at low-income schools or be qualified to teach subjects in which there is a shortage of teachers.

That's exactly how I qualified. I teach at a school where over 90% of the student population is on free or reduce lunch and I am a special needs teacher.

Sounds like you earned every cent of the forgiven loan balance! I paid mine off out of my own pocket, but since I work in the corporate world I could afford to so I'm hardly complaining.

Oh, wow!! I wonder if I can get any forgiven. I al getting perkins forgiven, but I have $46,000 in stafford that I would love to have any help with. I am going to try for the new plan and pay 10 years to get the rest forgiven, but I would like some done now if possible. I teach in a low income public school, too. How do I go about this?

Do some googling...some loans are eligible for cancellation but some are based on when you borrowed them. Google teacher student loan cancellation.

I am in the process of applying for the Teacher loan forgiveness in the amount of $17,500. I have taught five years in a qualifying low-income school as a spec. ed. teacher. My only problem is that just as I was taking out the studnet loan to finance my going back to school to be teacher, I was paying my final payment on my "old" undergraduate student loan. I remember making my last payment on my "old loan" to ACS (formerly AFSA) in Sept. 2000. This was a long time ago already & so I believe the last paymt I made on that loan was in Sept. 2000. They (ACS), in turn, reported the loan paid in full to the National Student Loan DataBase (NSLDB) on 10/07/00. I am assuming that in order to report my loan paid as of 10/07/00 that that must mean that my last payment had to have been in September 2000. I could kick myself for having not saved a copy of the final check I mailed to them but this was almost 9 years ago already. Anyhow, my new loan for my teacher studies was dispersed on 10/02/00 per the NSLDB. So, I am soooo afraid that I will lose out on getting this loan forgiveness simply because my "old" loan was noted as paid as of 10/07/00 and the new loan was dispersed on 10/02/00. I totally understand why the the loan forgiveness has that clause about old student loans--they don't want folks trying to pay off old debt with this forgiveness act but my "old" loan is clearly not part of the new loan I had taken out because I paid off my old loan myself right around the same exact time that I took out the new loan to become a teacher. I am certain I am going to be denied but I wonder if there is an appeals process that will hear me out on this. I've tried calling my bank to get a copy of the cancelled check I used to pay off my old loan but they only keep records for 7 years and we're talking this check was written nearly nine years ago. Also, ACS (my old loan's servicer) says that they can't go back that far to print me out a copy of my payment history. Although, I am thinking of calling back there on Monday and begging someone to anything that they can. I've found my dealings with ACS to be very professional & they seem so caring & willing to help if they can. One lady at ACS said that I could try calling my old loan's guarantor & lender to see if they could possibly provide me with a printout of my payments over the life of my old loan & this way that printout will confirm/verify that the last payment was made in Sept. 2000. I feel I need this as proof that my last payment on that old loan was made in sept. 2000 if I am to have any chance of appealing this once the denial comes from the Feds. I am already banking on the denial. The only proof I have that the last activity on my old (ACS) student loan was in Sept. 2000 is on my Equifax credit report where it says that he last activity on my ACS (AFSA) student loan account was Sept. 2000 with the acct. having been reported closed by them in Oct. 2000. Would this be proof enough for an appeal if necessary? I am willing to try my hardest with this. This loan forgiveness would help me soooo much. I feel doomed and I feel like no one can help and I feel that I am just "SOL", if you know what I mean. I feel it's ashame....I''ve worked so hard in my position at my current school & paid my old student loan off myself right when I took out the new one to go back to become a spec. needs teacher. I am so sad and despondent over this. Thanks for listening.

I am new to this board and I am interested in applying for a teacher loan forgiveness. Is this really true?! I can't believe it. Where and how do I go about doing this? The only program I am aware of is the one where if I were to work at a Title I school where I live and stay there for 5 years. If there is another way, I would love to apply!

I don't know if they'll pay for Ed. Leadership degrees, but I hope they will. I just finished my Masters and Specialists in it. If anyone knows, please tell. I'm almost sure they want you to remain in the classroom. I've already taught 11 years in Title 1 schools. I would stay in the classroom a little longer if I knew they'd pay off my grad loans for both degrees - 60K. Otherwise, I'm definitely going into administration ASAP (when the economy permits).

What were the steps you took? I have only received 500.00 each year for the Critical Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness. I' going on my 3rd year of teaching. My subject area is Exceptional Student Education (ESE) K-12.
