Hello,

I currently have two loans from the US Department of Education that have been consolidated to Great Lakes. I have a 120 day late payment on my loans from January 2014. At the time I was under the impression that my student loan payments were deferred. As soon as I found out that I had missed several payments I immediately paid the amount due and have been paying them off on time ever since. ( There was a deferred period in 2015 because I was back in school). Yesterday I signed up with myFico and noticed that the thing keeping my credit score lower (658) is the the delinquent account. My question is, should I try and send a GW letter to Great Lakes and explain my situation? This is my first time disputing anything on my credit report so I dont really know how to go about it. I am currently trying to get a mortgage and any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can always try a goodwill letter. It might not work, but there's also a chance that it will work. You can find examples and success stories by searching this forum, and also the Rebuilding Your Credit forum.
