Not a dumb question! I didn't know until I came here either. What EMS said is correct. Nine months of payments on time get you the removal of your default status, and if you are lucky, any reference to them ever having been late. It is available on federal student loans, not private.

Just one left! This has been the longest 9 months ever!

My question - what next? I know my loans will get assigned to someone - I'm sure that will all be easy enough. But what is my best course of action to get as many negative marks off as possible? Should I put in disputes for the old trade lines? And how soon??

Congrats !!! You are on your way !!!

As soon as you find they (your loans) have been assigned/ picked up/ purchased, dispute ALL of the default information.

I completed rehab in April & everything just settled last month. It's an EXCITING experience.

Very exciting! These have been hanging over my head for entirely too long. The loans are in 3 different tradelines - shown on EQ and EX. They are also listed duplicate as collection accounts on EQ and TU, but those are due to fall off in October. Hoping to get the TU ones early excluded, and I guess I will dispute those on EQ. Or should I leave them to fall off? The end goal is a new mortgage next spring - so I've got time to be patient.

If not mistaken, rehab is when you agree to pay X on time payments in return for removal of baddies reported.

Great job. Mine were rehabed back in 2012. I ended up in the hospital and from my hospital bed I made one of my payments. I could't afford to miss one. The late payments stay on your credit My loans got assigned to Navient. They sent a letter. After that I was determined to be good. since student loans dont go away. My score improved now at TU 680. I have a lot of late payments Used to be low 500s. Congrats on your sucess.
