I am currently in the last stage of processing with Nelnet for disability discharge. My status has just changed to "Pending Final Approval."

1. I'm not sure if this means that the Dept of Education will be approving me for discharge of my student loans.

and

2. How long will it take from this point?

I too am in the final days “Pending Final Approvals”. I’ve read that it could take anywhere from 3-10 weeks to get a decision fro the DOE on whether your discharge is approved/denied. Yes, even if it states “Pending Final Approval”, they can still deny it and send a letter as to why. Fingers crossed for the both of us.

I am an 100% service connected army vet and I just literally checked mines and my status had changed to "Permant Discharge" from "Pending Final Approval"!!! So I was in the "Pending Final Approval" for about a month. I started in late May. My loans were with Nelnet. Hope this is helpful or gives a ray of hope for you!

Okey Dokey everybody, I just got it approved, but now I have yet another question because, well, I am just complicated I guess. So, I got approved for the approximately $68K and currently not working and am awaiting for approval for SSA medical disability. I am with several medical problems and under the care of both a primary and rhematology specialist and I think I should get approved with my medical disability and it has been about 6 months under processing now. Probably a few more months left of it. My next student loan problem still exists though. You see, I still have about $47K in a defaulted HEAL (Health Education Assistance Loan). They have already taken 2 years worth of my tax returns. I stopped working in January this year. I have just submitted the application to them for loan forgiveness since they have their own application. All-in-all, I have three big applications ( one is done in the form of the AES discharge, one is the SSA medical application and now the HEAL default application ) to have to deal with here and all have my doctors filling out all these applications separately and this is costing money too because now I do not have any health insurance and have to pay cash for office visits. I am now living off savings which is really starting to dwindle. Basically, I have enough to live on until the end of this year. Again, I think I should be eligible for the SSA to come thru due to my medical conditions and have worked diligently with my doctors on it as well. 1. So my question is concerning the HEAL loan. If/when SSA comes thru first, the HEAL will garnish it. 2. I need to get that loan discharged too. UGGGG!!! My life is nothing but applications, faxing and paperwork!!!

I am not too sure on that. If that is a private loan, they may have different rules. Try not to stress too much because your health is more valuable then the loans. I hear this all the time and you may as well but, you have to just “Trust the process” at this point. Glad you got one portion of your student loans out of the way!

I truly hope you're right because I started my Application Process on 7 May 2018, was assigned an Application ID number on 15 May 2018, status changed to Pending Final Approval on 31 May 2018, and today marks day 29 in Pending Final Approval Status. Perhaps the length of time is different for everyone, and I too am a 100% disabled VET. My loans are with FedLoanServicing. I'm so anxious wanting to know the outcome of whether I've been approved or denied. I'll just remain hopeful, and pray for the best. Congratulations on you getting approved, as I'm sure it's a weight off your shoulders.

@Anonymous wrote:

I believe you are on your way to being discharged my friend, just keep the faith!!

Yes, I too believe that you will be ok. I am not sure, but I think that those who make it this far are in the running for discharge finality. They really look into this deeply, as they so should. So I think you will get the approval. However, they don't give you any information right down to the very last of it. I bit all my fingernails off waiting for those last days of approval.

I found this information regarding my remaining HEAL loan which has been in default/collections. Now that my other consolidated loans have been formally discharged and they were under the juristiction of the Dept of Education and as it appears is now the HEAL is too, I hope this will have weight in discharging those as well. Here is the information I have found on the HEAL loans (what is your take on it?):

From fiscal year 1978 through fiscal year 1998, the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) Program insured loans made by participating lenders to eligible graduate students in schools of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, public health, pharmacy, chiropractic, or in programs in health administration and clinical psychology. It is no longer possible to obtain a new HEAL Program loan. The making of new HEAL Program loans was discontinued on September 30, 1998.

On July 1, 2014, the HEAL Program was transferred from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to the U.S. Department of Education. Through this area, Federal Student Aid consolidates previous program documentation, new contact information, and new program guidance. The information is organized into four categories below and other useful contact and website links to the right. Each time we update this area, a notice will appear on the IFAP website’s "What’s New" page and in the IFAP subscription email.

The question is, was your HEAL Program Loans listed on your Discharge paperwork? If not, then you will perhaps have to try to get that discharge if they are eligible loans that fall within the dischargeable programs. I was under the impression that the Loans have to be of a certain type, so you will need to look into that further, and perhaps go a different route in obtaining a discharge. I found this website regarding the HEAL Program Loan, and it provided some information. https://thecollegeinvestor.com/20634/understanding-health-education-assistance-loan-program/

I will do two things at this point because, No, they were not included in the original discharge application. 1. I will just go ahead and proceed with their own discharge application and 2. I will send them the nelnet (dept of education discharge papers that I have just gotten from the other loans). Lets see what what they do with it now that they are under the dept of education anyways. I think I may have a chance for the HEAL to be discharged as well. I sure hope so! I am almost 60 years old and started taking out these loans in the mid 1980's and have paid what I borrowed almost 3 times over, but with all the compounding and placing interest to principle over the years. Ultimately, I lost my practice and couldn't keep up anymore and here I am now with a disability situation later in life.

Wow!!! It’s great to hear so many of you are being approved, or right next door to approval for your TPD app. I was awarded SSDI (first app submission) and a small medical (mental health) government retirement, however, because my doctor (16y+) of record for my psychiatric issues is a PhD, licensed clinical psychologist/neurologist, a QME (qualified medical evaluator), AND a disability evaluator, but not an MD or DO, also my SSDI award letter didn’t have a 5-7 year review on it my TPD app was denied!! Be warned TPD filers, a PhD’s submission is good enough for approval for federal and state agency disability benefits, but it’s not accepted/approved at Nelnet who processes TPD apps for the department of education!!
