It's best to do it asap on or after Oct 1, but Federal Work Study and institutional aid also depend on when the college you will be attending starts importing and processing ISIR's (the version of the SAR that FAFSA gives the school). As long as you do it before the school starts importing, and before your state's aid deadline, you should be good to go!

It's true, applying for aid on or after that Oct date is probably the best, but there are are some key deadlines for the institutions as well. There's also first come first serve aid and aid from limited resources. The article talks about how applying too late can increase the finance aid needed by thousands.
