If a veteran has military educational benfits, do these benefits affect the loan amount they may apply for? Specifically, in Texas there is the "Hazlewood Act" which provides public schools tuition "exemption" to veterans who were residents at time of enlistment and were honorably discharged and remain Texas residents. How might this affect loans?

I’m new to the boards and usually view and have learned a great deal of information. But I may be able to help out with your question since I am a Texas Veteran who has used the Hazelwood Act benefits. The Hazelwood Act covers up to 150 credit hours, so essentially you would not need a student loan. When I was obtaining my bachelor’s degree I used both my GI Bill benefits and was still able to receive a student loan to cover my final year. When I began my Master’s degree program I used my Hazelwood Act benefits but I had to ensure all of my GI Bill benefits before using the Hazelwood benefits. Even though my schooling was being covered by the Hazelwood benefits and no money was physically coming out of my pocked my school loan was still deferred.

I’m not sure if that answers your question or not but honestly, with Hazelwood I don’t know if one would really need a student loan.

i agree with PP. i have used MGIB & federal grants/loans together with no issues.

also, hazelwood does cover 100% of tuition, so i'm not sure what you would need a loan for...books maybe?

I have a friend who is thinking of using the Hazlewood benefits, but taking a large credit load and working less for 1 year and wants to consider using some loans to subsidize the reduced income in order to finish sooner. I advised taking it slower and avoiding debt, but I wasn't in a position of knowledge to comment on whether they could be combined or not.
