I'll second Lisa's advice, if all you need are books, just ask for help, from classmates, from professors, from the Librarian.

If you qualified for a Pell Grant, that sounds like you actually DID qualify for financial aid, because that's basically free money from the government. Sit down with someone from your financial aid office and ask them if you can apply for any Perkins or Stafford loans, those are federally-backed student loans and would be the best way to take the money out.

Were you denied a private or a federal loan? If it was a private loan, have you taken out the full amount of available federal loans? Have you talked to your Financial Aid office? Did you fill out a FAFSA?

Give us a little bit more information about your situation and hopefully we'll be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm not SL saavy, but have you tried other lenders?

It was a Sallie Mae but now that I think about it, it may have been a private from Sallie Mae. I did complete a FAFSA, do not qualify for Financial Aid so I get the Pell grant ( I think that is what it is called). Classes start Wednesday, the financial aid/student loans at the campus were delayed. The campus told me to fill out an emergency loan request for my tuition which I did but I needed money to purchase books and such. I am going to college on loans and paying for my child to attend a community college. Money is tight. So I answered an Email from Sallie Mae offering a loan, that is what was denied.

Does that make sense?

Thank you both for your responses.

If you explain this to your professors (they probably know about the delayed fin. aid) they can either loan you a copy of the book or photocopy a chapter for your temporary use until you can afford to buy a book. I've had this done for me when the bookstore temporarily ran out of books. Don't be afraid to speak up!

Regarding books: sometimes the instructor requests that the library keep a text book on hand for people to use and not check out. It may need the instructor to request it each semester, so I just found out at my college. I could not afford to photocopy the pages so I used my iPhone to copy the pages. I had to do 2 or 3 pictures for each page and make sure you hold it very still so as not to blur it. Then I was able to pinch zoom so I could read it. Saved me lots of money, lol.
