Lending Tree Auto PSA

Hi there.

I have had Lending Tree on my docket of possible companies to do business with since I started my rebuild.   Every time I looked to a personal loan, they'd soft pull me and tell me that they couldn't help.

Fast forward about 12-15 months, and Lending Tree has been hammering me to refi my auto with them.  I'm in a Cap One Auto loan, refi-ed last October (for all the same reasons) and it's about at a 7.XX%.

I also "updated my profile" with my Truck a couple of weeks ago.  It's a 2014;  Appx. 125K Miles on it (I drive a ton for work)  Point is, they HAVE this info.

Today, they hit me again:  "With your scores, you can now save a truckload of money!!"  so...  I'd be dumb if I didn't start the process, right?

Answer the questions... answer the questions... answer the questions,  Looking all the while to see if it would be a soft pull or a hard pull.  The info never came and I stalled before the end.   I searched here; I searched online elsewhere.  I do NOT need a futile hard pull... thanks.

I had to call.  The gentleman on the other end of the line was very helpful, and here's what I learned:

1) AUTO LOANS WITH LENDING TREE ARE A HARD PULL EVERY TIME.   Their other loans are not, but the autos are.  Not only will they pull, their lenders will also pull.   There's no "soft pull prequal" like you may expect.

2) Relevant to me: They will NOT refi your vehicle if it has over 100,000 miles on it.   As I said, they already have this info about my vehicle, so I think it's a bit disingenuous to continue to press me for a refi. (ON the other hand and in fairness, I don't know if it would have stopped me and said, "Sorry, your vehicle doesn't qualify" without the pull if I had completed the app.   I was already 4 screens deeper than the point when I entered my mileage, however, and it hadn't stopped me yet.

I hope this info helps someone, somewhere.  Stay safe & healthy, all.

Rebuilding is like smoking a brisket: it takes a lot of love, the right spice, and a ton of patience. You don't rush a brisket-- it goes low & slow. Sometimes, you need a crutch through the stall. In the end, the process matters.
2021 goals:
1) GARDEN until I app for Mortgage.
2) Pay Down overall revolving debt aggressively and accountably, to under 30%, including my HELOC.
3) Don't waste the gifted 0% time on the student loans.
4) Ultimately, refi the house at non-usury terms.
