Re: Looking to get a Tesla in December

Well said @ridgebackpilot !! There are alot of things to consider but it sounds like you are going to buy the Tesla @Anonymous if you can get the loan. The work you have done on cleaning up your file is awesome, congrats. Consider doing the following:

1). Join Navy. Whether you do the car loan there or not, start building the history.

2). Find out what your real FICO scores are across the board. EQ, TU, EX. If the charge for a MyFico report is within the budget, you'll get all the scores including Fico 9's. If you only need it for a one time check on your full 3B reports and scores it may be worth the cost. There is nothing more disheartening than working off of a score that isn't factual. IMHO, you need to know.

3). If you don't know your DTI currently, know what is is. (Monthly expenses including rent or mortgage and credit card/loan payments divided by your gross monthly income). With the new job and influx of cash, that has to be a huge help in lowering yout DTI.

4). Figure out what the new car payment added in to the current DTI will look like. Try out some different interest rates/loan terms for the Tesla and get an idea of where you need to be to stay under 36% DTI optimally. As far under 36% as you can comfortably go is even better.

5). Ask Navy about the auto loan vs. the Tesla delivery date and let them know you'd like to prequal and see what they suggest.

6). After you know everything above, then you can make the best decision for your situation regarding adding the credit card. Even though it's a sizable list, it can all be accomplished in a couple of hours or less.

Feel free to come back here and give us your current scores (Fico 9's are what Navy uses) and any other DP's that you have and we may be able to give you some additional thoughts. Knowledge is power IMHO when it comes to where the numbers shake out. If you include all your current debts on your CR's, the balance owed and minimum payments that would be helpful as well. You have some valuable time between now and December and sometimes a little change here or there can make a huge impact on scores. Smiley Very Happy

I was with the same company for two years and my income was fairly low and business was spotty. That was the reason for some of my credit issues.  I recently got a new job in June that is much better paying.  I make about 10k a month.  My only credit liabilities are my credit card ($25 balance max), Toyota loan ($281, will be paid off before December), and my student loans which are about $300 a month.  That brings my DTI to around 6%.  If I add rent and car insurance its around 12%.

Right now, I only have 3 open accounts (average credit history of 4 yrs) & 3 closed.  1 is my toyota lease which had perfect payment history for 3 years. 2 are charged off credit cards from 2015 that have been paid now.

I also have 2 30 day lates on my current toyota loan dating back to 1/19 & 3/19. Also a 120 day late (10/19) on my credit card because I forgot to update my auto pay.

I understand that I have recent credit issues, but I think going to a local CU and being able to explain my situation will help.  I am willing to put down up to 20k on the car if needed as well.

The data you provided are very useful. With your income, DTI, previous loans, and credit history, you really shouldn't have a problem getting qualified for an auto loan through Navy Federal. Lenders may offer you a higher APR on your loan due to your history of late payments. They could also require that you come up with a downpayment, although that's becoming less common.

While it's always a good idea to shop around, I suspect a local credit union or bank won't be able to offer you rates as competitive as a bigger national CU like Navy, DCU, or PenFed.

@Anonymous @ridgebackpilot

I am going to call Navy Fed tomorrow and open an account with them. Do you think I should apply for a credit card with them now or hold off?

I am waiting a little longer to order a credit report.  I just recently paid a charge off account and am waiting for it to update to paid. Also, I want to wait until October where I will hit the 1 year mark since my last late payment and should see a score boost.

I am getting my score from Experian.com at the moment.  FICO 8 - 637/ FICO AUTO 2 - 653

Re: Looking to get a Tesla in December

I did the credit card prequalification (soft pull) and was approved for all their credit cards. I doubt this is 100% accurate.

@Anonymous

Congrats on being a new member of the Navy family! The prequal on their site is not reliable at all as you thought lol!

If the new card is something that will benefit your portfolio and goals then I would say try for it and if you get approved it will grow quickly. Navy rewards history with some impressive CLI's and opportunities for additional products. As I mentioned up thread, it will most likely (99.9%) be a TU HP.

The Tesla prequal will be EQ so even though you may or may not lose a few EQ points when the new card account reports, you are a few months away from the auto loan so you should recover those points easily.

Personally, I would talk to the auto loan specialist and ask if you prequal now and the offer expires before the car is ready, can you extend or is it a new app and HP? I would guess you'd start over but YMMV. I guess the thing that keeps coming up for me is wondering if you have any concern about getting an approval for such an expensive car? If I was on the fence about it, I would probably get a pre qual and make sure I knew what I was up against with rate and payment or if I was required to put a big chunk down or the app was a flat denial. I imagine that if you establish that baseline, then things will only be that much better in December. Just some random 'pre-coffee' thoughts.

I just think the card and the car are two different things. You may get a card approval, maybe not but you'll never know unless you give it a go. If you do app for a card online, most approvals are not instant these days and go to a review. So if you get the 24-48 hour message that's means they are reviewing it.

Fingers crossed for you my friend and I will await updates and perhaps you'll get some additional thoughts from @ridgebackpilot !! 😉

Re: Looking to get a Tesla in December

I applied for the Navy Fed Platinum card and was approved for $1,000 credit limit.  Finally a unsecured card.  I will put a charge on the card and pay it off in full every month to start building some credit history with them.

Well done! Navy is great for approvals that you might not see from other card issuers.

In terms of applying for your auto loan, you'd be wise to follow the advice you've recieved from @Anonymous . Call and talk with a Navy auto loan specialist to see if you can get pre-qualified for a loan. You can always offer a substantial downpayment and see what they say. Good luck!

Re: Looking to get a Tesla in December

@Anonymous Congrats on the new Platinum card!! The thing about Navy is that it doesn't matter if they offer a secured card  and it's opened for $500 or you get an unsecured card like you did. With consistant payments and some history under your belt it will grow like crazy!! You are officially 'IN' my friend. It's such a great feeling to be offered an unsecured card!! Well done.

With them the secret in the first few months is to use it and then PIF before the statement cuts. Some just put a recurring charge on the card like a cable bill or something like that that they already pay monthly. Try to keep the card under 9% utilization at all times for now. So charge up to like $85 and then pay it off. Now that you are with Navy, let me introduce you to the monster Navy thread which is all things credit cards.

https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Applications/Navy-Federal-Thread-for-CLI-and-Additional-Cards/td-p/3419729

This thread has been going strong for almost 6 years and a billion pages. It is the go-to for all things cards and CLI's at Navy. Maybe go back a couple of hundred pages (seriously) and read forward from there. That will keep you very busy until you are ready to go for your first CLI or a second Navy card.

You've made a lot of progress in less than 24 hours and I couldn't be happier for you! Please keep us in the loop about the auto loan and I'll be watching for your card updates in the big thread as well!! Smiley Very Happy
